However I am interested to know - if I am downloading a podcast and at the same time sending an email of quite some size (ie at the moment 1.6MG) then are they sharing the same bandwidth and therefore process more slowly than if one action were done at a time ?

My guess is that they would both be slower.

457307 2006-05-24 09:53:00 In simple terms, even downloading uses some upstream bandwidth to confirm the download packet has been received with no errors. If you are uploading yourself at the same time, the upload will slow as its sharing upload bandwidth with the download process.

Hence a 2MB connection downloading at full speed may use about 64kbps upstream speed. This is one of the reasons many people including myself are pissed with the pathetic 128K upstream bandwidth Telecom give us on our so called broadband plans, unless we PAY more for a decent 512K that should be a minimum standard.
