| 456837 | 2006-05-22 07:11:00 | Hi there Some of you guys here might have saw my previous post some days ago regarding to this system I was trying to built (not for myself but for a friend) . So long story short . . . How would I actually build a system with gigabyte GA-8I915P Duo with 2 optical drives and 1 IDE hdd? Of course with other typical PC parts . Though really I just want to know how you would set up the jumpers on the IDE drives and what to set in the bios etc . No need to go too techincal . Other notes: -Motherboard has onboard raid -Has 3 IDE ports The manual motherboard is: here ( . gigabyte . com . tw/Support/Motherboard/Manual_Model . aspx?ClassValue=Motherboard&ProductID=1801&ProductName=GA-8I915P%20Duo" target="_blank">www . gigabyte . com . tw) ---------------------- The current setup on the m/b is IDE1- OD1 (master), OD2 (slave) ----- (OD=Opitcal drive) IDE2- HDD (master) Bios setting: Raid ENABLED At first, I only had 1 OD and 1 HDD on IDE1 port and have Raid disabled to install WinXP (I did not install raid drivers while the window disk was booting up, now I thought of it, it would of helped), any other setup would of caused a blue screen error page or resulting in one of two OD or HDD not being detected . So from this setup I've managed to install WinXP, thus once its installed, I then turned on RAID and install the raid drivers for the motherboard, thus I could use the IDE2 port and plugged a 2nd OD, so the setup is like above shown in the diagram . Reminder, RAID is NOW ENABLED in the BIOS, so now I've managed to get what I want, and everything works perfectly . Got a lot of things installed and gave it to the friend . Now my friend txted me saying that the computer gave an ERROR of some sort saying System Duplicate error . Not sure where he got that error from though from the sound of it, I would assume it would be related to the Raid settings in the bios . The reason why I didnt turn off raid was because I was afraid I might lose the HDD, cause I've already spent over 16hrs on getting that system going (only planned on no more than 3hrs) I thought if everything was all good while the raid is on and managed to install several games and apps and all is working, what else could go wrong . . . so now I'm here  I did abit more search around the net regarding to this problem, and it seems like I aint the only one having this problem with this motherboard, though from other forums none of the post regarding to this problem was finished most just got just left there hanging . Gigabyte faq wasnt much help either . So I'm really hoping someone here can help . For those interested, heres ( . pressf1 . co . nz/showthread . php?p=455220#post455220" target="_blank">www . pressf1 . co . nz) my previous post regarding or somewhat related to this . Thanks a lot :o |

| 456838 | 2006-05-22 07:14:00 | Oh btw, if any of you guys read the manual for that motherboard, the recommended setup for the IDE ports saying have 2 OD in IDE1 (of course have the jumpers set) and the HDD in the IDE2, does not work. The HDD doesnt get detected in IDE2, regardless if RAID was ENABLE or DISBALED. Thanks |

| 456839 | 2006-05-22 07:44:00 | Disable RAID if you only have 1 hard drive. I usually have the hard drive as primary master (Master on IDE channel 0), my DVD writer as secondry master & DVD ROM as secondry slave. Usually when I find this kind of problem, people have put 2 masters or 2 slaves on one channel. EDIT: just checked out the specs on your motherboard & there is only 1 IDE channel that you can plug optical drives into (probably the black one to the left hand side) and you can plug your hard drive into either of the UltraDMA 133 (Green) IDE channels. Once again, I will say: Don't enable RAID with ony 1 hard drive. I'm curious to know why you went with IDE rather than SATA in a new system? |

RAID has nothing to do with optical drives. The only reason you would want RAID enabled is if you wanted a raid array of some kind with 2 hard drives. I would installm XP with only the HDD as Primary master and the DVD as Secondary master. If you really have to have 2 optical drives, add the CD after. As slave on one of them. But why bother? The DVD does everything anyway. If it still causes problems then, take it back to the shop and either get them to do it or get another motherbaord. Gigabyte sucks. |

| 456841 | 2006-05-22 10:16:00 | Thanks for the replies, though from what suggested all I've tried and all have failed . Except for having 2 Master on one IDE channel, thats something new to me . If => IDE1 - OD1 + OD2 IDE2 - HDD This will result in window not detecting a HDD or window not able to install a itself on a HDD . I've tried this setup before, so I know >_< . Thus if HDD was on IDE1, OD1 and OD2 on IDE2 will be not detected in the bios, just the HDD . However this setup only works if window was already installed and have raid drivers installed . Though if RAID in the bios was DISABLED, then the window will not boot up as then report a missing HDD error . Basically in other words, if raid was disabled and I have windows installed, it'll just be like having 1 IDE channel on my mb . Though if raid was enable I would not be able to install Window regardless if my OD & HDD is on IDE1 or not . If I could have 1 OD and 1 HDD on this comp, then this comp would of been done days ago . But because that friend of mine insisted on having 2 OD & 1 HDD . . . thus its causing all this problem . As you guys can see why I've spent more than 3hrs building or atealst not building but getting this system to function properly . Any more suggestions would be great . |

| 456844 | 2006-06-01 21:13:00 | Hello, Did you ever succeed in your config with 1 harddisk and 2 optical drives on this mobo? I have the same problems now, you had, please advise Thanks |

IMHO Asus has only really developed decent mobo's in the last 2 years.... The problem here is not the mobo, but the knowledged used to assemble the components. |
