458085 2006-05-27 01:36:00 Hey all,

I got me a new PC here recently, and never really had a reason to use the mic. Recently, I decided to mess with it for a game and it didn't work. So I went to the sound recorder and found it still didn't record. It will, however, record if I move my lips to basically touch the mic. But then it is incredibly loud and horribly distorted.

I figured it meant the volume needed adjusted to capture my voice, but doesn't seem to be it. I went to the speaker properties, and checked it out. For recording, Microphone is selected and volume is completely maxxed out. It must not be muted anywhere - not just because I didn't see it, but because it *will* record if right on top of the mic. I also tried my father's mic to see if it was just broke, but both do the same thing. It does this regardless if I use the front plug-in, or the one on the back (the actual sound card plug-in). I also set up the options (under advanced and the like) just like on the other computer, but it remains the same.

I think its a Sound Blaster Live, 24 bit if that helps any. It plays back sound amazingly well at least. Since it is a new computer, I don't think it would be any driver problems. I mean, not stopping the sound the way it is. Here are a few more specs if it makes any difference:

Windows Media Edition (thought it would be cooler =D)
Pentium D 2.8 Mghz
GForce 6800 (I believe.. or 6600... shouldn't matter tho, I wouldn't think)
1 Gig Ram

Well, I would appreciate any help you all could give me, and if you need any more further information, please let me know. Thanks in advance!

458086 2006-05-27 02:33:00 Is the Sound Blaster Media Centre Software installed.
Go here if it has not or you don't have a disk.

458087 2006-05-27 08:33:00 Well, I ran through that list (scanned over em) and it was listing things like creative diagnostics, graphic equalizer, minidisc center, speaker settings, device control, and that sort -- Yes I have those installed.

Any other ideas?

458090 2006-05-27 18:38:00 Sorry, Trev, didn't mean to avoid your question in there. Amongst those other things, yes I also have the Media Source stuff installed. Besides using sound recorder I have also tried to use their player and record a sample with the same problems.

Oh, and MTLance, I don't understand what you mean by the question marks... just don't understand my problem or just don't know of a way to fix it? Anyhow... if there are any other ideas out there I would appreciate it.

458091 2006-05-27 21:47:00 I had the same problem as you when I got my SB Audigy2 ZS Card and found I had the recording volume turned up to high in the Creative Media Source Player. You need to turn it down to half volume or less.
Click on the view menu and then show recording status and turn the recording volume down. Hope that works.

458092 2006-05-28 18:25:00 Still nada =( I would imagine your fix would work if the mic was *always* picking up the voice too loudly, but it only picks it up if I am extremely close (right against) to the mic. I took the mic and moved it to another computer and I can easily sit back and speak and it will pick it up.

Ah well, thanks for trying to work through it with me =D Any other ideas pop into mind?

458093 2006-05-28 22:11:00 Just a stab in the dark here. Dose your mother board have onboard sound. Is it turned off. Check in bios to make sure it is off.
