457864 2006-05-26 06:04:00 ok a fun one for ya.

i'll try to make a long story short...
my pc burnt out the psu socket so i used the cpu (1.4 atho) and ram (512meg 333ddr) to upgrade a mates pc (same motherboard but he had a duron).

went fine for a few days then started going slow andthe hardrive light would stay on for long periods. no software fault found but i upgraded the PSU as it was only a cheap 300w. it seamed to go better.

after a few more days it died with courpt registry. while fixing that i kept getting these slow downs and the hardrive started to click and get warm.

while testing the ram i ran it back at the slow speed (200mhz instead of the new 266mhz) and the sytem ran fine (for an under clocked cpu).

any ideas?

Your power supply died?
In which case its likely it may have damaged the other components in the PC too.

457866 2006-05-26 10:05:00 it just overheated the psu connector pins and melted the psu plug. i actually had it running fine on another psu but it would have never lasted since the mobo connector pins have been overheated and will always cause poor contact unless replaced. so i replaced the mobo instead of redoing the pins.

cpu and ram all work fine.

457867 2006-06-05 01:20:00 just for the record.......

turns out the prob was a motherboard cap. not blown or swollen but just a little loose. i must have knocked it a some stage breaking the connection inside the cap. soldered a replacement in and is all going well ....so far......
