| 457433 | 2006-05-24 21:16:00 | Hi I am in the process of changing over to Linux. I have Windows XP and Mandriva on a partition each with Lilo to start either. I have found Mandriva a bit slow on my Celeron 533 192mb. and were thinking of trying SimplyMEPIS 3.3 which I have a magazine disk for. I will make some unallocated space from my Windows partition but will SimplyMEPIS see my existing boot setup and add to the Lilo menu or will I have trouble? Thanks asdex |

I haven't done this, but you "should" be OK. :D The Linux installers are smart enough to detect Windows installations so they won't be worried by another Linux installation. Print a copy of /etc/lilo.conf, so you can see what you have now. My safety belt for lilo and Grub boot managers is to keep a floppy with the MBR so I can reinstall it if anything goes wrong. dd if=/dev/hda of=oldMBR.dat bs=512 count=1, then mcopy oldMBR.dat a:. (That will save the partition table too). |
