457435 2006-05-24 21:05:00 I bought my PC from PC Company just before the company died .

XP was preinstalled, I got a hologram Windows sticker on the side, an XP booklet and a plain PC Company Preinstalled Software CD .

I also got a long string of numbers, which I typed in to validate my XP, all was well, so I was assured that the Windows was genuine .

But now I have Microsoft telling me my Windows is pirated, and wanting $281 for a fix!!

I thought the purpose of entering that string or numbers was to validate XP!!! Is there anything I can do?

Thanks, Biddy

457436 2006-05-24 21:31:00 You've got two options:

Argue with MS and refuse to pay.

Pay up and write it off to experience.

Unless you like losing I'd suggest the second option. :angry

So you reinstalled this PC recently did you? And it did do its activation OK/ So where does MS come into it - telling you its bogus?

This long string of numbers, are they on the hologram sticker on the side of the case? Or where did they come from?

457440 2006-05-25 00:07:00 what could have happened is they have used one key on mulitiable pc's. there is a key changer so you can go put your key in or ring MS and explain, they may have used your key on mulitable pc's. tweak'e (69)

457442 2006-05-25 00:33:00 My Compaq XP CD key has to be manually activated. I wonder if WGA would detect it as pirated?
I'm using Ubuntu on that computer now, so I guess I'll never know since I can't legaly use that copy of windows on any other computer.

457443 2006-05-25 02:25:00 Its now got to the point that you now have to get a new activation number everytime you reinstall XP. Pancake (6359)
457444 2006-05-25 02:35:00 You should be able to sort it out with Microsoft. You've got that legal sticker. Jack's advice to "just give them money" is not very wise. That would just encourage them. And we can't have that. :D Graham L (2)
