457445 2006-05-26 21:41:00 Yes - they were on the COP which appears genuine
But just now I ran the Validation tool - only to find that (presumable the one time I had the PC fixed, at PC Company a week after I bought it!) I am now running an XP Pro version with a different product verification string!

457446 2006-05-27 01:41:00 Personally I'd take em (Microsoft) to the Small Claims tribunal if they refuse to re-validate it for you. Those ar******s are the most arrogant pricks on the planet, and won't give you an inch, even when they're clearly not right. Greg (193)
457447 2006-05-27 02:19:00 You could well be correct about Microsoft, Greg. But it would be reasonable for the poster to give them a chance to sort the situation out.

Try it Sue. But I wouldn't advise talking to the person who answers the phone in the terms Greg has used. Apart from the fact that that person doesn't make MS's policies (and is probably being exploited by them), they will have standard procedures for this far from uncommon situation.

457448 2006-05-27 09:06:00 Althoug the windows is valid but the disc and serial key has been installed on multiple PC's to cause it to disactivate or make it as a pirated program. MTLance (6768)
457449 2006-05-27 09:19:00 did i miss something? if hes got the proof (eg the XP sticker on the pc) then it should be ok with that serial number. all other people useing that number, who wo't have the sticker, will have to get new os or change key. tweak'e (69)
457450 2006-05-27 10:01:00 But did they actually use the CD key that is on the sticker? Greven (91)
457451 2006-05-27 10:22:00 What are the chances that the original XP install that matches the COA was XP Home? PaulD (232)

You can get a key changer and change the key to the one on your computer.
This will not help if multiple PCs have been set up with the same 25 characters.

This being XP Pro you may have a volume licence which Microsoft has determined has not actually been issued.

You could get a friend with a digital camera to take a photo of the sticker in situ as it were. Proof of purchase by way of invoice from the PC Company and contact Microsoft will help as well. Your original Cds were supplied by The PC Company which is now defunct I guess.

If it were me I would phone Microsoft in Auckland. They have been helpful to me in the past when a floppy disk died on my original copy of Works 4.5.

I sent a scan of the manual. Proof of purchase and all floppy disks. Had a new copy within the week.

I'll ring Microsoft. I think the XP originally installed was the Home edition with the product key on the sticker - I remember entering the validation string in the first day or two of owning it. But it seems that when I took it back to have the front USB ports connected, PC COmpan's tech support did something odd.
Given I have the original CD, and there is a recovery partition, the easiest thing (If MS won't give me a Pro validation number and CD (which is probably unlikely as I only paid for a Home edition), I can just copy my personal stuff off and reinstall.
I have 2 questions about doing that:
1. Do I need to copy A CD driver? I can'd work out how the CD player will work, but I guess it will...
2. I have emails I'd rather not loose (two users with different XP accounts do). What do I copy so that I can reinstall those - ie so after the recovery, outlook will again show our emails?

Thanks all
Sue

457454 2006-05-28 01:32:00 sounds like they repaired it/upgraded it with a dodgy XP pro disk.

i have no idea why but some people seem to thing an illegal ver of XPpro is actually better than a legal ver of XPhome.

i would simply save everything, format reinstall and use your disk and serial number. i would still ring MS and let them know as their will be othe PcCo customers with the same problem.
