457909 2006-05-26 06:05:00 i was downloading on my kubuntu machine
at the same time i copied a file from that machine onto my xp machine through samba
while i was copying i get nice speed around 8000kb/sec between my computers
but then i notice my download on kubuntu nearly dropped to zero
after a while of copying files gaim even logged my msn out..

i thought it was some duplex problem or something
so checked my NIC setting on kubuntu machine
and forced it to work at full duplex at 100mbps
thought this would fix it..but no

when i did that... my lan speed dropped to around 200kb/s
so..changed it back to half duplex but still puzzled over what happened..
any ideas??

457910 2006-05-26 06:13:00 I don't know. :D

You should be able to do things like this (because Linux is a real multiuser/multitasking OS) though "perhaps" not from the same session.

Try logging on in another session, but I don't know how easy that is in Ubuntu. I'd Ctrl/Alt/F2 to a command line login, but it might not allow that one to start X-Window.:) (Ctrl/Alt/F7 toggles back).

You should certainly be able to start the transfer from the XP end.

Is this the first time this has happened?

What exactly is your setup?:

ADSL<--->NIC1[Kubuntu]NIC2<--->NIC3[WXP] .

If so, did you configure NIC1 to duplex at 100mps?

457912 2006-05-26 12:30:00 adsl router
xp and kubuntu connected through the ports in the router
router is dse Cat No XH1149

if both kubuntu and xp nic set at 100 full duplex
this will cause the major slow down

now the setting is xp on 100 full duplex
kubuntu on 100 half duplex

Ah. Not like a linux misconfiuration then. More likely a router problem.

457914 2006-05-27 04:15:00 It might be just a lot of Ethernet collisions. Switches don't eliminate collisions when one host is receiving packets from two different sources. Collisions cost. ;) The router's log (or ifconfig on the Linux box) will show if that's the problem. If it is, there's no easy solution. You could multihome your Linux machine with another network card, but this might not be simple. ;) Graham L (2)

The OP is not using the Kubuntu machine as a router. There is a separate hardware router, so you there is no log on the Linux box.

Had a glance at the specs at DSE, and it describes it as having a full switch. I have much the same set up and uses as the OP, but not the slowdown and no Windows machines.

457916 2006-05-27 10:56:00 i thought about using two nic on kubuntu machine..but not that desperate
and if there are collusions how am i supose to get rid of them??

Is this a new set-up and the first time you have noticed this, or has been always like this etc?

It does sound like collisions, although this shouldn't be happening - not to that degree anyway. Maybe you should have a good look through the manual for that router.

457918 2006-05-27 22:20:00 been like this for a while now but didn't really do much about it
dse manual don't go into such detail..and i checked my router again and it's been flahsed so now it's XH1169

from ifconfig i don't see any collusions or errors

i might just network the two comps through a crossover cable and see if same thing happens..so router won't be in the way if that's the problem
and see what happens..
