| 458650 | 2006-05-29 03:04:00 | October this year. But this is a total disaster. The telecom network can CLEARLY not handle the small jump from 2 - 3.5 MB as many of us are aware! (I am on Dial up speeds now during the evening) If Ihug etc "market" faster speeds, other ISP's will follow, which means we will have people bursting at higher speeds which will probably bring Even more of the network to its knees including some of the people that are fine now at 3.5MB The high contention ratios make faster speed like 7Mb impossible, it is not rocket science. This will be a marketing win, sure as hell not a win for us consumers. Boooo! I would remove that smile from your post Trev. |

One thing you forget is the ISP's should be able to set there own contention ratios, which should solve this issue The one thing we should all be worried about is the exchanges we are connected to & how well they will cope. |

Nope not for a least another year until the LLU in passed as law and other ISP's are able to install there own gear and THEN they can set contention ratio's. Until then Telecom can set the rules on there own network. Unless Telecom invest big time in there network (which i seriously doubt), any major forced speed increase is going to hurt the average consumer. |

| 458655 | 2006-05-29 07:45:00 | " Faster and cheaper broadband should be on the market by October at the latest, with the Commerce Commission expected to order Telecom to offer the fastest internet speed it can to its competitors. " Ah, so we'll all be on 256k then. And Master Frost says: " until the LLU in passed as law and other ISP's are able to install there own gear and THEN they can set contention ratio's. " Oh? And all this little ISPs will soon be busy racing around the whole of NZ installing stuff in ALL the exchanges everywhere? Somehow I doubt it. There'll be the usual mouthing about offering " fast " broadband without mentioning the small print that says except if you live somewhere other than Akld, Wngtn or Ch/ch. |
