2006-05-27 23:11:00 | Ive got a computer here that sometimes gives an error report on start-up advising that it couldnt load HIMEM.sys. Thinking it may have a RAM problem I thought I would run MemTest-86 v3.0. The README file suggests that the complete test could take 5 hours or longer but this has been running 19hrs and is still going. So far all is 100%. So, the questions are: Is this normal? Does this utility just keep running? Is there a better utility for this type of test? (I mean 19hrs plus is pushing ones patience a bit :illogical ) The processor is a 800meg AMD Duron, the memory 96meg, & OS 98se.

2006-05-27 23:36:00 | Well wouldnt it! Ive just pressed escape and removed the disk so Im not sure how many times it passed. Grrrrrr. However, I take it that this utility just keeps running. You dont get a message that the test is finished, say like ScanDisk? My guess is after 19hrs theres not much wrong with the memory.

2006-05-27 23:39:00 | LOL, well with my RAM it passed 50 times in 22 hrs so... it should have passed many times, as long as there were no errors  Yes, it just keeps running untill you stop it... That is my guess too :)

2006-05-28 01:09:00 | HIMEM.SYS is a file on your hard disk (a part of Windows), it's not your memory. Try replacing the file by booting the PC from a live CD (something like knoppix) and replacing HIMEM.SYS from your 98SE disk. You won't be able to do this from within Windows (come to that, you can't even boot Windows without this file). Note that it will be wrapped up in a cab file (usually called something like 'HIMEM.SY_'). Once you have replaced the file, run scandisk and repair any filesystem errors. It may also help to do a bad sector scan. If scandisk doesn't find any errors, scan the PC for viruses too. | Erayd (23) | |
2006-05-28 03:57:00 | Thanks all, yes I ran MemTest again and it took all of 8 mins to do one pass so I guess It did 140 plus passes without finding anything . I think Ill look elsewhere . Yes, I realise Himem is a system file but because the problem is intermittent I wondered if the problem was more likely to be hardware . Ive run AVG, Scandisk, addaware and defragged but come up empty each time . Im considering an over the top reinstallation of Win98se but still have a gut feeling that the problem is more likely to be hardware, given how intermittent the problem is .

2006-05-28 05:43:00 | Good idea DRCSPY. Scandisk "Thorough" claims no bad sectors but I believe that isn't bullet proof.

2006-05-28 20:58:00 | Well I Googled & Googled but couldnt find anything put out by Quantum to test their Hard-Drives. But I did remember I had a programme called Disk Doctor that came with Nortons SystemWorks. So I installed and run that and the HDD again came up good. Ill try an over the top reinstall and see what happens, unless someone has a better idea.
