458569 2006-05-28 20:35:00 Hi,
I recently upgraded from Norton Antivirus 2002 to Norton Internet Security, which arrived on CD last week in the mail. I couldn't install it because my computer was in the shop having the DVD/CD Rom drive replaced under warranty. When the computer arrived home I found that the shop had already installed 'AVG Free Edition - Control Center' which seems to do most things.
I am a complete beginner at this sort of thing and I'm wondering whether I need the Norton Security now? Is the AVG good control? I never seemed to have any problems with Norton 2002 and the Windows XP firewall. Any help would be great.

458570 2006-05-28 21:10:00 AVG is fine as an antivirus.
Nortons is a pig of a thing. And expensive.
You can get free 3rd party firewalls too.

458571 2006-05-28 21:26:00 I agree with pctek. Nortons slows down computers significantly and causes big problems when it breaks, which it often does.

AVG is fine but if you wish to use a paid anti-virus program with an excellent reputation then you might want to try NOD32. You will also need a third-party firewall. ZoneAlarm is what most inexperienced people use. Don't rely on just the Windows firewall.

Send the Nortons NIS upgrade back and ask for a refund.

458572 2006-05-29 02:22:00 Norton Internet Security is probably the worst thing you could do to your computer apart from giving it a deliberate virus - then again it might be the same thing .

AVG does a solid enough job and the Windows firewall in conjunction with Windows defender should be enough if you're not downloading dodgy stuff .

458573 2006-05-29 03:43:00 Thank you - I do try not to download dodgy stuff - living where we do makes it pretty near impossible to download anything in a reasonable timeframe anyway.
I have Windows Defender here as well so I'll see about sending the Norton Back.
Thanks Again.

458574 2006-05-29 11:24:00 Please be aware that Windows Defender is not a firewall. If you do not install a third-party firewall then outgoing traffic will not be monitored. FoxyMX (5)
458575 2006-05-29 11:32:00 I am also another AVG convert, and threw out the Nortons. But I also use Zone Alarm 'free', not the pro version. Windows xp firewall only stops stuff getting into your puter, doesn't do anything about something dialing out. (Like ET Phone Home) LOL That is why I turned off my XP firewall and use Zone alarm. supergran (108)

What about the built in Firewall in XP? Is this good enough? Apologies...already answered above.

458577 2006-05-29 13:36:00 I'd use a third party firewall in favour of the MS XP offering .

What do you use your PC for Prisoner? If it contains files that are important to you, then use decent AV software like NOD32 . There's nothing wrong with AVG, a bit slow on the updates, and doesn't catch everthing, but hey it's free and I find it's fine on the family PC, but no way do I risk it on my business machine (these days) .

While your at it, grab Spybot S&E and Adaware for your antispyware and adware needs and, if you're not already using Firefox browser and Thunderbord for email, or Opera, get those too and make them the default over IE and Outlook Express .

458578 2006-05-29 20:01:00 I ditched Nortons & moved to AVG about a year ago as well :) Windows defender, adaware, spybot, and Sygate as my firewall. Netscape as my browser. I haven't had anything as long as i can remember.

Cheers
