458175 2006-05-27 06:02:00 I live in a retirement village with a medical alarm system and I want to go onto adsl broadband.
The isp's seem to want about $150 installation charge for alarmed phone lines. What do they do for this, and can I do it myself?
I think they install a splitter but I need more detail.
Any help please?

458176 2006-05-27 06:17:00 they need to wire in a splitter before the alarm connection.

mind you it depends on the type of alarm system. a medical system in a retirement village may be seperate to the phone system. ask the maintance person/admin etc they may know.

458177 2006-05-27 07:40:00 Because if the alarm uses your phone line it will affect your broadband. Or vice versa.
No unless you have lots of experience wiring up phone jacks then you can't do it yourself.

458178 2006-05-27 08:17:00 It is illegal to make connections with phone line in NZ right? And it is kinda complicated from your main phone line coming into your home there's where they modify it. Sorry I guess you can't install it yourself. MTLance (6768)
458179 2006-05-27 09:09:00 you can do anything you like on the house side of the incoming point on the house. you can do add/remove phone jacks and filters as much as you like. tweak'e (69)
458180 2006-05-27 09:15:00 It's because the alarm is hard wired into the phone line and there isn't a suitable filter for this type of connection. A splitter at the demarcation point removes the need to filter each other device on the line. PaulD (232)
458181 2006-05-27 09:31:00 How are you guys going to do that? MTLance (6768)

Yep. So long as you know what you're doing. Cause if you stuff it up, you are the one stuck with paying someone to fix it.

458183 2006-05-27 10:06:00 For the sake of $150 is it worth taking any risk with a medical alarm? sam m (517)
