2006-05-30 21:31:00 | Hello At the moment I have a Telecom D-Linkk DSL302G modem and a Linksys WRT54g wireless router as netw. and internet setup. I like to change that to a Modem router and I would like to get the Linksys WAG54G but the whole of NZ hasn't got one(out of stock!!). So, can someone tel me which other machines are as good? Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks G

2006-05-30 21:58:00 | Why do you want to change? I agree that the 302G is useless, but the Linksys is pretty good and there's no reason to spend all that money when you could just replace the modem. By the way - don't connect the modem to the WAN port on the Linksys (Plug it into a LAN port instead). If you have the modem doing the NAT and the linksys just acting as an AP, you will free up more resources on the linksys. Otherwise you'll just end up with a totally pointless double-NAT process. RE upgrading the modem - I recommend the Nokia M1122. Yes, I know it's ancient (about 5 years old) but ever since I got my hands on one I've found it uncrashable. No matter what happens to it (even 3000+ BT simultaneous connections) it keeps right on going. You will probably want to upgrade the firmware on it though - this will wipe the useless Telecom settings & password, and let you set everything yourself. You will need a TFTP server and an RJ-45/DB9 serial cable to do this.

2006-05-31 01:12:00 | Bletch Thanks for that advise. Now, I have tried to connect the modem on another point(not the internet slot) and that would not work. The reason for changing is mainly because I have not been able to set those two up for BT. Would you mind being a bit more specific about the connection. Thanks Gion

2006-05-31 23:10:00 | 1. Connect them in the following way: Internet>>302g>>Linksys LAN port 2. Other PCs should either be plugged into the LAN ports on the linksys router or connected via wireless. Note: before you try to get the wireless working, set it up using the wired connection. Then once you have that working, set up the wireless connection. Finally, after you are sure that the wireless works, turn on encryption. Step 4 is critical - without it your setup will not function at all! 3. Only ONE of these devices should be running DHCP - I recommend using the linksys for this, as it's a much more stable device than the 302g. 4. Make sure that both devices are in the same subnet. Note that they are different by default - the 302g defaults to 10.0.0.0/8 (IP 10.1.1.1) and the linksys defaults to 192.168.1.0/24 (IP 192.168.1.1). 5. Set the 302g up for NAT. This is enabled by default, but you will need to make sure that the NAT range includes your DHCP scope. 5. If you want to port-forward for BitTorrent, assign a static DHCP address to the PC running BT - it will make your life a lot easier. 6. Forward the BT port to the BT PC's IP address (set this in the 302g NAPT section) Note that the 302g is not really a good choice for BT connections - expect it to crash from time to time. Anything over about 300 simultaneous connections is just begging for a crash (of the 302g). Your life will be a lot simpler if you replace the 302g with a decent ADSL router. Alternatively, you could use a modem bridged to the Linksys WAN port, but this is less desirable - you want to keep the linksys doing as little as possible to allow it to achieve the fastest throughput on an encrypted wireless link.

Next time post it here so that anyone else suffering from the same problem can follow the thread through. Its also not very clear exactly what is what. Can you post the following information for each device (PC, 302G, WRT54G) - please be clear exactly which device the info belongs to, as that is the main reason for your previous post being unclear. Also, please refrain from masking your IP addresses (except your public IP - feel free to mask that) as it only causes more confusion, and means I can't check them for conflicts / correct subnets & scopes. 1. IP Address 2. Subnet Mask 3. Default Gateway (PC Only) 4. How the devices are connected (and to which port) 5. DHCP Server Enabled/Disabled 6. DHCP Server Scope (for each enabled server) 7. DHCP netmask & gateway (for each enabled server) Note that you should do this using a wired setup - don't try to use the wireless until you're sure the wired setup is working. The PC should be plugged into one of the LAN ports on the WRT54G. |

2006-06-06 11:05:00 | Cheers, that makes a bit more sense. Configure your setup in the following way: DSL 302G LAN IP Address: 192.168.1.1 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 DHCP Server: on DHCP Scope: 192.168.1.3 - 192.168.1.99 DHCP Static Lease: your.mac.address.here (set the ip to something between 192.168.1.100 & 192.168.1.199 Change rule 1 to: ALL | NAPT | ANY | 192.168.1.3 | 192.168.1.199 Any portmaps you need should be added as a bimap rule to your.ip.address.here Linksys IP Address: 192.168.1.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 DHCP Server: off PCs (both wireless & wired) Each PC should be set to obtain IP & DNS addresses automatically. Device Connections Phone Line >> D-Link 302G RJ-22 (WAN) port D-Link 302G LAN Port >> WRT54G LAN Port (not the WAN port) Wired PCs >> WRT54G LAN Ports Wireless PCs >> WRT54G Wireless connection Does this make sense?

2006-06-06 19:21:00 | Hi Bletch Thanks One thing I am not to sure about is that supposedly the P2P receiver comp does need a static IP. Is that not necessary? Have you an idea how I could save all the existing settings in the 302g, just in case I have troubles and want to get back quickly so I can work and then try again at another time? Also what is the D-Link 302G RJ-22 ? "Any portmaps you need should be added as a bimap rule to your.ip.address.here" Are those the nat rules for forwarding? And if the computer has a dynamic IP?("Each PC should be set to obtain IP & DNS addresses automatically") I hope you are not giving up with me yet? Regards Gion
