459099 2006-05-30 06:05:00 I've decided to put in a larger HDD in my computer, and while I'm at it, upgrade to XP Pro (I've previously been using 2000). My problem is that I can't seem to get windows to recognise the HDD. My MB is an ABIT IT7-MAX2V2.0

After XP boots from the CD, I press F6 to install the highpoint controller (which controls raid, SATA and 2 additional IDE channels on my MB - as far as I understand anyway), accept the EULA, but when it comes time to select the partition I want to install on, the HDD shows up as the correct size (238473MB Disk 0 at ID 0 on bus 0 on hpt374), but has the message below it:

Setup cannot access this disk

Which means I cant do anything with it, partition it etc. The HDD is brand new, bought a couple of weeks ago and is a seagate baracuda 7200.9 SATA disk.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

459100 2006-05-30 06:11:00 Are you installing XP on a SATA hdd??

If so, did you connect power to it?? With a SATA power adapter?

The header on the mobo is for data not for power.

459101 2006-05-30 06:14:00 Yes I know that, and yes it has both (SATA) power and (SATA) data going to the HDD. I just put in a new power supply (at the same time as changing the HDD) so there were no adapters etc needed to get the correct SATA connections. rusty_knifenz (4065)
459102 2006-05-30 06:18:00 Hmm ok. See if theres a third or 4th master option in the BIOS.

These entries maybe there for the SATA.

Select one of them, and see which one brings up the SATA.

Then try and install XP again.

459103 2006-05-30 06:29:00 In the bios there is primary master/slave and secondary master/slave (both masters have optical drives connected and recognised on them).

What confuses me is that the HDD is not mentioned anywhere in the bios. To see that it is even detected, I need to quit out of the bios, wait for the pc to load a little more until it gets to the highpoint technologies raid controller (hpt374) bios setup, and go into that bios (ctrl-h). This is normally used for setting up RAID arrays, but the HDD does show up there on channel 3 or 4 master (depends which SATA header on the MB I have it connected to).

The drive size etc are correct, and under status it is selected as BOOT disk (there's no other HDDs connected so that's the only option).

If I don't install the 3rd party raid controller during XP setup, the install wont even get as far as the EULA, and simply declares that windows cannot detect any HDDs connected to the PC.

459104 2006-05-30 06:42:00 The Seagate website mentions using DiscWizard to "successfully install and obtain the maximum capacity from the drive". Is it worth giving this a shot? rusty_knifenz (4065)
459105 2006-05-30 07:26:00 You may need to jumper the drive as it is SATA 2.5 & the MB is SATA

www.seagate.com

had a similar problem myself, until I downloaded & read the install instructions..... :D

459106 2006-05-30 07:52:00 Ah yes... instructions. Fancy that!

Thanks, that looks like it will do the trick.

Phew, I thought I might have broken my MB or something.

459107 2006-05-30 09:02:00 Well I thought that was looking hopeful but still no joy. Same message comes up during setup.

Is there some way I can check that the problem isn't with the HDD and that it is correctly limited to 150Gbit?

459108 2006-05-30 09:57:00 Well, I ran Seagate's DOS diagnostic program on the drive, and it's reporting that every sector on the disk is bad... So I think it's fairly safe to conclude that it's a faulty disk. I'll try it in a friends PC anyway just to be sure.

So now I get to deal with the infamous SuperCheap PC returns/repair department... Atleast i'm just down the road from them so I can go and see them in person.

Thanks for your suggestions so far guys.
