458934 2006-05-29 21:26:00 I have a neighbour with a fairly old Socket A system. It has an ECS MB in it, whether or not thats relevant.

It has just had a fresh install of Win98SE on it, has all the AV and antispyware and is clean.

They have recently hooked up on broadband and apparently it hangs quite often when opening either IE or Outlook Express.

I have had it here running it for ages and it was fine. I used my router.

I have been to their place too and could not get it to hang while I was there.

While I had it at my place they used an even older, very cluttered laptop, it would hang on that too, but I can't rule out the fact the laptop is a complete mess and is hardly surprising that it would have problems, its also 99% full.

They generally leave the PC on all day but I have checked temps and they are fine.

Short of standing in front of their PC all day as it seems fine when I'm there, any ideas on what its problem is?
There aren't any error messages.

458935 2006-05-29 21:35:00 Is it windows that hangs or just the internet? Reinstall TCP/IP.
Swap with your modem/router or even connection for a while.
Get telecom to check the line.

458936 2006-05-29 22:26:00 Does it hang if using Firefox? CYaBro (73)
458937 2006-05-30 00:48:00 Mostly the entire PC locks up and has to be rebooted usually. Sometimes you can escape with end tasking the app.
Dunno about Firefox, they have it but mostly the kids use it, the others use IE. I've tried both, and couldn't get it to hang.
Its JUST had a fresh install of WIndows. By me. Its clean. Its fine.
I did suggest they try changing in this order:
The phone cable
The network cable
The router itself

The line seems ok, they didn't have a problem with dialup.
