2006-05-29 11:58:00 | I purchased one of these DVD units through PC World a few months ago and I have just gotten around to installing it into my IBM Thinkcentre P4 PC (only 256MB of RAM could be an issue?) The installation seemed to go OK and I have installed the DVD unit as a slave to the existing CD ROM/DVD player unit. I have changed the jumpers (to slave) as directed. I have installed the Nero 6 software which came with it (on a CD) using the new drive. I then loaded the latest PC World DVD and the system shutdown and re-started by itself, and continued to do so each time the main desk top was reached. I tried another DVD with the same result. I removed the DVD and the system booted up and works fine (I am using it now) and CDs seem to work fine also. It is only when a DVD is inserted into the drive that I end up in this cycle of rebooting. It looks like the system sees the DVD tries to fire it up and crashed and reboots for some reason. Does anybody have any idea what I have done wrong? I cannot find anything helpful on the Sony site.

2006-05-30 11:43:00 | Thanks for that Speedy. I removed the original CDROM/DVD player altogether and installed the new unit in its place with the same jumper settings (master). I got the same result, it plays a CDROM OK but windows crashes when I put a DVD in the tray. I had a look at the BIOS but I could not see anything that needed changing, what were you suggesting? I am running XP Home. I noticed in the Device manager that the unit is set to play Region 2 DVDs. Could that be the problem? When I selected NZ as the location it selected region 4, however the program would not let me change the region. At the moment I have the new unit only in the PC and it plays CDROMs and crashes when I put a DVD in. At least my old unit played DVDs. Any other suggestions or do I have a dud?

2006-05-30 19:37:00 | Hmm it sounds like the previous cd/dvd rom player you had in the system . You changed or played more than 4 different dvd zones . Which is why you cant change the DVD region now . After 4 changes, it locks it, on the last zone dvd you played . Which sounds like it was a region 2 DVD . I dont think it SHOULD crash the system . It just wouldnt play whatever zone DVD you've put in the DVD player . I take it these are movie DVD's that you're trying to play? Or are they the DVD's from a PCWorld mag? You didnt get this Sony from Supercheap did you? The only other thing, I can think of, is a firmware update for the burner . Which, may or may not, fix the crashing . And if that doesnt fix it, I would get it replaced . If its under warranty . Get an ASUS 1608P, or similar instead . Altho, if the DVD zone is locked at Zone 2 . Even if u replace the Sony, it may not play anything else but Zone 2 DVD's anyway . Unless you get a program like DVD x player, but this isn't free . BUT, you can download a trial of it . Or these other programs, which can play any zone DVD .

2006-05-31 01:26:00 | I actually bought the DVD writer through a PC World promotion a few months back, so maybe I should ask them if there have been any other problems. The Device manager says that I have 4 more change times available to change the region, but it also says that I need to put the media in the drive to do so, but if I do it crashes....Catch 22? I will give the firmware update a try tonight. I have been mainly using the latest PC World DVD, though I did try a movie once with the same result.

2006-05-31 10:34:00 | Updated firmware which was the same version (1.0d) which seems to be the latest. Did it anyway in case of corruption. No change, same problem. Looks like a return to Sony is in order.

2006-06-01 10:36:00 | I have since removed the new unit and put the old one back and evrything works fine. Both the PC World DVD and a music video play well. | awdw (10388) | |
