458740 2006-05-29 05:24:00 a while ago i had my ethernet linked directly from my modem to my computer. about 6 months ago i setup a wireless internet network and it was fine but it was laggy. i'm tired of the lag so i want to directly connect my modem to my computer with an ethernet cord. problem is, when i connect it nothing happens and the internet doesn't work. i haven't changed anything recently so i don't know why it doesn't work. any help is appreciated. it's affecting my intense WoW gaming. bull22 (10469)
458741 2006-05-29 06:04:00 I'd look at the cable. It should be a "crossover", usually. (Some devices can check and switch themselves to suit, but unless you connect through a hub or switch or switch output on a router, you should use a crossover). Many crossovers have red protective boots on the plugs. You can tell if you hold the plugs side by side, with the cable down, and the latches away from you. Counting from left to right, pin 1 should go to pin 3 on the other plug; 2 to 6, 3 to 1, and 6 to 3. Graham L (2)
458742 2006-05-29 06:34:00 i don't think that is the problem because i use the same cord to use this wireless i'm on right now to try and connect it directly. i'll check into though, thnx for the advice. i think it might have to do something with the network connections but i can't be sure. bull22 (10469)
458743 2006-05-29 07:51:00 ok, i looked at my network connections, when i connected the cable to my computer and under my local area connection is said it was acquiring network address but then said it couldn't connect/ there was low network connectivity. i still have my wireless network on, could that be conflicting with the connection?

edit: i am taking out the cord from the wireless to the modem and putting that cord into the computer.

458745 2006-05-29 11:27:00 U may want to check that that the ethernet card in the system has not been disabled. Goto control panel, system, device manager Fredtan (9581)
458746 2006-05-30 02:39:00 nope, it's enabled. :( any other suggestions? bull22 (10469)
458747 2006-05-30 02:46:00 If its saying low network connectivity, it sounds like it getting a weak signal.

And if its keeps on saying acquiring ip address, it sounds like you havent entered the ip in manually.

If its on obtain an ip automatically, if you're rebooting it, it'll most probably change the ip address.
