459862 2006-06-02 01:14:00 Hi,
I get an extra www, also .net appends in the URL when I'm using IE6 e.g. http://www.www.hotmail.com.net. IE and Firefox won't open the search page when I use my wireless broadband connection (Netgear DG834).

However I can get through to the internet using dialup no problems at all.

I've run antispyware and antivirus checks without result.

Do you mean that you don't get the www & .net problem?

I need a bit more info to be able to help properly, but judging by your first post I'm guessing that your wireless router is either denying you internet access or you're not getting a proper DHCP lease (hence the search page errors). Is DHCP switched on? Do you know if the wireless connection works? The www & .net error is probably internet explorer attempting to find the site for you - if it is unable to connect to the original address, IE will attempt to modify the URL for you.

459864 2006-06-02 02:10:00 Hi there

I also get www.www.yahoo.com.net, the extra www and .net appears on every URL.

I can connect to the wireless router through my wireless adapter. I'll check that DHCP is turned on when I get home

Cheers

459865 2006-06-02 05:45:00 Hi there

Have checked the wireless router (wirelessly), DHCP is turned on. Still no luck.

I'm using my dialup connection to reply. I can get any webpage the extra www and .net do not show up.

Cheers

459866 2006-06-02 12:41:00 1. Have you ever had the wireless working before?
2. Have you ever had the wired connection working before?
3. Does the system work if you connect your PC to an ethernet port on the router?
DO 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 via wired ethernet
4. Is your PC in the same subnet as the router?
5. Can you access the router config page?
6. Can you ping the router?
7. Can you ping a public IP (try 64.23 3. 167.99)
8. Can you ping a public hostname (try google.com)
9. Now check 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 via wireless

Other points to consider:
1. Is the router set to filter by mac address? It may be locking you out
2. Do you have encryption on? Switch it off until the problem is resolved.
3. Is DHCP enabled on the PC?
4. Is NAT enabled on the router?

How much networking knowledge do you have? (i.e. how technical am I allowed to get before it stops being useful)

459867 2006-06-03 11:41:00 My computer was successfully connecting wirelessly but not after I did a reformat and XP re-installation.

I can successfully connect to the internet with the ethernet cable connected and perform items 4 - 8. But still can't connect wirelessly.

Encryption is off, NAT and DHCP are enabled as is the MAC address listed as a Trusted Wireless station, Access Control is turned on.

Windows XP Pro controls the wireless network settings using fixed IP address and Subnet mask. Default gateway is not set.

I feel I am reasonably proficient if you want to be more technical with the settings.

459868 2006-06-04 07:52:00 Why is the default gateway not set? This could be half your problem, as by default Windows will send any packets destined for an address outside its own subnet via the default gateway, unless the routing tables have been changed. Try setting the default gateway to the address of the router. You may also need to set the DNS - this should be the IP address of the router, and the secondary DNS should be the IP address of your ISP's backup DNS server.

Did this work?

459869 2006-06-04 10:20:00 It worked!

Interestingly, the previous configuration before the reformat worked without those settings .

Many thanks for solving my problem .
