459332 2006-05-31 03:40:00 Hi, I have a CD drive and a DVD drive in my computer. In the BIOS I can select to boot from CDROM, HD, Floppy but there's no selection for DVD drive. It all works and boots from a CD ok but I want to boot a Linux system that is on DVD. It doesn't have an iso file to burn to CD like some.
Any ideas on how I can boot from the DVD?
Can I just unplug the CD drive and make the BIOS think the DVD drive is the CD drive to boot from or is there an easier way?
Thanks,
asdex

459334 2006-05-31 06:36:00 You should be able to do this. I have a CD-RW on Master and a DVD-RW on Slave, yet I can select the DVD drive to be first boot option. DVD wasn't listed as a boot device in the BIOS, and going from memory it was called a CDROM. Depending upon your BIOS brand/version, under Boot Menu try arrowing down to the CD-ROM entry and hit enter. On my system this gives you a list of all connected ATAPI devices. If two entries are shown and both are called CD-ROM, then try the second one if your DVD is on Slave. Jen (38)

Otherwise you could disable the secondary master (your CD drive) from the bios and hopefully it will try the secondary master (DVD drive). Or just bite the bullet and change the jumpers on the drives (or drive positions on the cables if using cable select).

459336 2006-06-01 01:03:00 Thanks very much. I changed the drive jumpers to make the DVD the master and changed the plugs also. Not sure if I needed to change the plugs as they are in the same cable but now the DVD is using the last plug. It all worked well and I have installed and are trying SUSE Slick which is faster than Windows XP and the other five Linux OS I've tried on my Celeron 533
Thanks,
Graham
