460176 2006-06-03 06:22:00 Yikes! System Restore, which has never let me down in the past, has stopped working--the last three restore points (1, 2, and 3 June) were unsuccessful. Of these, the first two were created by me, and today's was an automatic 'standard checkpoint'.

Secondly:is it my computer, or has Google Deskbar (not toolbar) suddenly stopped working? My other browsers work OK but DB,which I use most often, has just died on me.

I tried uninstalling, then discovered that the download is no longer available on the Google site. I reinstalled my original download, which I had kept, but still no go.

I installed Norton Internet Security about a week ago, and a complete system scan 2 days ago showed no problems. AdAware and Spybot removed a small number of problems found, but no more than usual. Those cleanups were also done on 1 June. I routinely run these checks weekly.

I've used Deskbar several times since then (no problems). I don't remember when I last had to use System Restore.

XP Home Edition, SP2

460177 2006-06-03 06:35:00 System Restore from Microsoft Reliable? I don't think so. Norton GoBack can restore better than Windows System Restore. Using Windows one will mess up the whoe system.:( MTLance (6768)
460178 2006-06-04 00:45:00 I'm aware that many people scorn both MS and Norton. Excuse me if I'm naive here, but I also believe that with careful installation and regular updating, they perform well, and neither have ever caused me problems.

I found my own solution to the problem this morning, and I post it here for the benefit of anyone else who encounters the same difficulty. Despite what I said above, it turns out that any 2006 version of a Norton Product doesn't mix well with System Restore!

Every time you use SR, you have to disable the 'Turn protection on for my Symantic product' feature, run SR (which will now work properly), then enable the Symantic product protection again.

Note that this is not the same as right-clicking the system tray icon and disabling the product itself.

Thanks to the MVP whose page on System Restore had a link to this one (bertk.mvps.org).

460179 2006-06-04 06:36:00 Thanks colmack for posting back with the solution that helped you for the benefit of others. :)

I see from the original date of the article that the bug has been known about for a while. It must only affect some systems and not others, as we don't hear about it much considering how many people have Nortons. Something to keep in mind in future. :)

460180 2006-06-04 06:46:00 I didn't use 2006 one I use 2005 one and update it to 4.0. Nothing happened to me at the moment. MTLance (6768)
460181 2006-06-04 07:26:00 Afterthought: the system restore problem is now solved, but my Google Deskbar still doesn't function. Any Google links to the Deskbar divert to the new Google Desktop, which is not the same thing at all.

Are any other Deskbar users finding that it doesn't work any more?

460182 2006-06-04 07:33:00 Windows Restore have lots of problem. So don't use it. Use GOBack and hardly any files problem although your mails, and downloaded files will be deleted it is much safer for emengency use like Spyware Quake attack if Anti-Virus fails.
Get the 2005 version not the new one. and then update it, it'll work fine.
