460146 2006-06-03 04:35:00 Recently I am having this weird problem with my adsl connection. I am currently on the ihug 3.5mb plan, but when I am downloading stuff from IRC or play online games it is extremely slow around 10k~15k. I had a speed check on ihug's homepage and the estimated speed is around 200k. What could be the problem here ?
Everything was fine before the end of May.. :waughh:

Welcome to PressF1 :)

Try doing a speed test here: www.nzdsl.co.nz & http: at different times of the day & see what you get.

460148 2006-06-03 05:22:00 I believe Ihugs plans are are split in too. One part being peak time and the other part being off peak time. I think they work something like this. Say you are on a 3gb plan 1gb would be availible between 8am and 8pm peak time and the 2gb would be availible between 8pm and 8am off peak. If you use more than your allocated useage in one of these periods your speed well be capped back to just over dialup speed until your next billing period. I suspect you have used up your allocated bandwidth in one of these periods.

Yeah, I thought that is the problem too, but I just had a check and I have not pass the bandwith limit.
It seems that I am having problems when I am downloaing from America and Japan servers. Or maybe I should say apart from HTTP downloading from Internet Explorer, everthing is slow.

460150 2006-06-03 07:39:00 They are probably just traffic shaping everything apart from HTTP traffic. For a majority of users web pages are what the Internet is, so ISPs tend to leave HTTP alone and shape the heck out of everything else.

Yep, I'm on IHUGs 3.5 mb plan too. The speed of stuff such as bittorrent (or even HTTP) can be all over the place.

maybe that could be the problem, but when I was on the 256k plan I can download up to 30ks from IRC. I had just downloaded a 250mb file from HTTP and average speed was around 200k, straight after that I started downloading from IRC and the speed was 11k.
Could it be something wrong with the router that I am using ?
Or maybe it's time to change ISP. :groan:
