460604 2006-06-05 06:46:00 My friend has just recently moved house, she has two comps....

the one we are talking about is a Dell.....the other one is a made one...

She cannot get this Dell to connect to the net, its never been online in its life, and she has checked, rechecked and is very tempted to throw it out the window,
what things can i check to identify the problem?
why wont it dial or connect, apparently there is no dial sound, but then the modem speacker could be turned off?

is it likely something has been ticked like never dial a connection? and if so where do i look or tell her to look?

460605 2006-06-05 06:54:00 I take it that there is a working modem in the computer? Has the phone line been plugged into the correct port (and not the ethernet port)? Has the ISP details been entered in correctly? Jen (38)

460607 2006-06-05 07:58:00 Yeah . i would if i could . . . . . . . . .

Its a dell running xp home, that hasnt been on the net, no idea if it even has sp1 or 2 most likely not, not sure what firewall or virus thing if any is on it .

she says its is plugged in correctly, she says all internet settings seem fine,

would it not have a modem? is it not usual for a dell to have a modem?

i dont know what you want to know that i know to tell . . . . . . . . . . . im confused . . . . . . . . . ive gone thro lots of things with her, but not seen the pc personally .

460608 2006-06-05 08:03:00 OK, well assuming that everything has been correctly configured and plugged in, what error message does she get when she tries to dial out?

Look under Hardware and make sure there isn't an exclamation mark beside the modem. Right click and go into properties and make sure it is enabled.

Somewhere there is a "test modem" button that may help. Can't remember where it is, but someone else might point you in the right direction.

[Edit: good ol' google :p]

460609 2006-06-05 08:23:00 many dells DONT come with a modem it's quite likely she's plugged the modem lead into the ethernet plug hole on the pc they look exactly the same cept the ethernet hole is a bit larger........i've seen others fooled by this.......goto controlpanel/system/hardware/device manager and see if a modem is listed if not then she aint got one......also if it's gotta modem it'll be 'low down' on the back of the box.......nearish the floor level .......if it's an ethernet card it'll be quite a bit higherup........ drcspy (146)
460610 2006-06-05 08:28:00 Or if it has a modem in it, and its a voicemodem, (which can have 2 connections on it), the phoneline maybe in the connection labelled phone, not the line out connection.

Which is why it says there's no dialtone. Its plugged into the wrong connection on the modem.

460611 2006-06-05 09:59:00 Have you tried going into control panel click on internet options and check that it says always dial my internet connection. Hitech (9024)
460612 2006-06-05 16:37:00 Have you tried going into control panel click on internet options and check that it says always dial my internet connection .

not relevant . . . . . . . . the 'no dial tone' issue points to other causes for this problem .

460613 2006-06-05 18:28:00 What does she actually do when trying to connect? Have to wonder if dial-up hasn't even been set up yet. Might pay for her to phone her ISP helpdesk to help her with that. Greg (193)
