460495 2006-06-05 02:44:00 Yeah I have an Inspiron B130 laptop from Dell which has wireless internet enabled. The connection speed has pretty much always been crappy with little or no signal. Does anybody know how I can improve the connection speed? Do I need to buy something, or is there another way? alsoslick (10137)
460496 2006-06-05 03:30:00 Are you talking about connecting to wireless internet, or has the laptop got a WLAN so u can connect to a network wirelessly. There's a diff.

If you have a wireless network card of some kind, and u want wireless internet, you have to sign up to get it.

Wireless networking on the other hand, has nothing to do with the above.

Unless the laptop is on a network, and networked to a computer that is already connected to the net. Either by dialup, or ADSL.

If u mean you're connected to something like Woosh, I would give them a ring, to see what the prob is.

460498 2006-06-05 03:58:00 So you're talking about the WLAN then .

I take it this laptop is connected to another computer somewhere?/ Wirelessly??

Or is the laptop the only computer there?

Having a PC with WLAN doesnt mean it'll connect to the net wirelessly, unless you're connected to an ISP like Woosh .

Or connected thru another computer, thats already connected to the net somehow . And you want to connect to the main computer wirelessly .

460499 2006-06-05 04:34:00 It is being connected to another computer, not my own. alsoslick (10137)
460500 2006-06-05 05:15:00 Does the other computer have an Access point??

Which is usually needed, if u use wireless?

And how are you trying to connect? In AD-Hoc or Infrastructure mode?

And what are you using on both? WEP? Or something better, like WPA? WPA-PSK? If these are available .

Wireless is usually configured as if it were an ethernet network . Have you configured both WLANS?

And I take it both WLANS have drivers installed? Or using XP SP2?? The wizard in control panel?

I take it, this other computer belongs to someone you know?

And they know you're trying to access their connection?
