460700 2006-06-06 06:30:00 Linux is not that bad. Besides I'm starting to like it, and I could save money buying one Vista for one my desktop only. I have 2 computers at the moment and will use 2 different OS on my 2 different computers. I wonder if Linux have problems with Vista network or not. Or I'll hate it, for sure. MTLance (6768)
460701 2006-06-06 07:37:00 Vista? :groan:
One OS I WILL NEVER use.

When XP does go stale, its off to linux for me

Why? You'll missed out lots of softwares that created for Windows. I'm trying out Linux at the moment and not bad except not compatible with windows files.:(

Linux has programs to open most data files created by windows programs - it just can't run the programs themselves.

460704 2006-06-06 08:19:00 So need to download it? Like Windows Media Player Codec? For video/music files? MTLance (6768)

I have XP and wish I had a legal copy of Windows 2000, all the software and "bells and whistles" that come with XP generally, I do not need.

I actually removed a good chunk of it and saved myself aroun 300-400 megs on the installation cd. This is after I have installed/integrated all critical updates from MS onto it.

I'm a minimalist person that likes to use a selected array of software to accomplish my tasks.
That and I'm a player of old games (ala Thief, System Shock 2, Star Wars.)
So having the latest and greatest OS is not really a necesscity.

If it aint broke, why fix it?

As it is with any other Graphical based OS . Including but not limited to, Linux MacOS, BeOS and others .
A double click and it loads . Unless it hasnt been registered before .

One thing I hate about XP is that they changed the default program for Jpegs to the File and Fax viewer . I hated that change .
Nothing like viewing your own CG animation through IE, but nooo they had to change it . . . :yuck:

Try changing it to IE now and it wont work like it used to . That and the fact that every so often, it will reset the association back to the default viewer .

The same goes with Windows Media Player 9 / 10 .
Alter the association, then load WMP 9/10 and BOOM it auto resets the associations without permission . Therefore I had it permanently removed and left Media player 6 in .

460708 2006-06-06 09:22:00 If you saw one, point me in the direction of it. I have yet to see someone having virus problems with Linux. Why do you think Linux doesn't have antivirus products? There's no reason to make any. The few antivirus programs that do run on Linux (ClamAV as an example) scan for Windows viruses - these don't even affect Linux, but are scanned for to help prevent Windows picking them up. I'm sure that at some point in the future we may see some kind of virus issue (with Linux), but AFAIK it's not a problem as this point in time. Also if serious vulnerabilities are discovered with Linux, they are often patched within a few hours (the ubuntu plaintext password bug is a good example) - compare that to the better part of a month for Windows.

Linux is too slow to catch a virus and no one uses it anyway, so why write a virus or virus protection.

Its much like air bags for a bambina, why bother.

Nothing wrong with Fax viewer for me. I did notice that old computers open pictures with IE but I hate them. Can't zoom it or zoom out.
WMedia 10 is kinda sucks it configure the whole thing for ya.
But Windows OS is still better.
