What you do have to do is research what you want to do. Use google. Google is your freind. Sign up for the Ubuntu forumsand lurk there. I have just jumped ship frolm Fedora to Suse and they do things different ways. So I read the forums and use the search function. Things you need to know: Installing software. (Hint, synaptic) multimedia - Once you know how to install software that is. It can be a steep learning curve but it is worthwhile and once you demonstrate to other people that you are trying to teach your self rather than be hand fed what you need to know, they will be more likely to help. |

Linux can be somewhat like that and you can recompile kernels. You can use a GUI (Graphical User Interface) like windows within Linux. The main thing I like is that various distributions come with a programming languge like C for free. Why not learn? I am 63 years old now and have not finished learning. |

You can still play your old MP3 files by installing MP3 support (see the section called Multimedia Codecs) . Instructions for other formats, such as Windows Media Audio (wma/wmv) and other patent encumbered formats can be found on the Ubuntu WikiMultimedia Codecs ( . ubuntu . com/6 . 06/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/codecs . html" target="_blank">help . ubuntu . com) - General information on multimedia codecs Now, for MP3 support: Restricted Formats ( . ubuntu . com/RestrictedFormats" target="_blank">wiki . ubuntu . com) - Playing Non Free Media - MP3s Enable the multiverse and universe repositories and install the proper package - Adding Repositories in Ubuntu ( . ubuntu . com/6 . 06/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/extra-repositories . html#id2542172" target="_blank">help . ubuntu . com) After doing that select reload, search for and install gstreamer0 . 10-plugins-ugly . How to use the Synaptic Package Manager ( . ubuntu . com/6 . 06/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/synaptic . html" target="_blank">help . ubuntu . com) This will automatically download and install packages for you . You will find you will learn much more by researching this stuff yourself, like how to use Synaptic, what file types Ubuntu uses (it is debian based), where to get more software from etc . |
