2006-06-09 00:27:00 | you are all wrong. OSX is best  Just thought I would get that in before the lockYou forgot to vote. ;) So Windows design for home? Linux for Offices? I heard of Linux is very good for Offices especially servers. Linux Ubuntu 6.06 can't even get info on my processor and when error pops up it uses PC speaker to make a really gay sound and XP didn't. These are my observations which may help you out MTLance: Windows and Mac OS are generally easier for consumers to use as an operating system. If games are your thing then Windows offers greater variety. If you want to live in a world without viruses buy a Mac. Interface is a personal preference. This isn't to say Linux isn't suitable for home use, but generally it is more suited to more advanced users who are doing different sort of tasks to the average consumer. Linux is a very popular operating system for servers because it is very stable and secure. It is in this area it displays it's greatest strengths, and many of the things you mentioned you don't like about Linux - such as device compatibility - aren't relevant in this situation. My advice: Try out all three and pick the one that works best for you. :)

2006-06-09 01:05:00 | I have a ubuntu/win dual boot at home. I use ubuntu about 0.1% of the time. This is because everything just works great for me on windows. It is also because for some development stuff I am doing, all the best free tools I have found have been for windows. I actually want to use Ubuntu for all things except gaming. Unfortunately I havn't found a good linux replacement for them. Anyone know a good linux equivilant for these? Tortoise SVN / Tortoise Merge PHP Designer Style Master Oh, and MTLance, if you ever want good Ubuntu help, go on irc. /server irc.freenode.net /join #ubuntu

That was your sinister plan all along, wasn't it? :DOh yeah, I've been planning this for months. :D You can always visit a computer store to try out alternative operating systems, but it is hard to truly test an operating system in that situation so finding a friend with a Mac or locating one you can use for a few weeks is the best idea. This operating system thread just reminded me of BeOS. Whatever happened to that? |

2006-06-09 01:54:00 | I've been using Macs since '85, so they're what I am most used to, and the reason I continue to. I have used non-Macs all the way from DoS to XP, but somehow always end up with a mac on my desk again. | teszeract (8723) | |
2006-06-09 02:11:00 | Maybe this quote from "The Tao of Programming" . canonical . org/~kragen/tao-of-programming . html" target="_blank">www . canonical . org might help in a whimsical way to put things in perspective :D "There was once a programmer who was attached to the court of the warlord of Wu . The warlord asked the programmer: ``Which is easier to design: an accounting package or an operating system?'' ``An operating system,'' replied the programmer . The warlord uttered an exclamation of disbelief . ``Surely an accounting package is trivial next to the complexity of an operating system,'' he said . ``Not so,'' said the programmer, ``when designing an accounting package, the programmer operates as a mediator between people having different ideas: how it must operate, how its reports must appear, and how it must conform to the tax laws . By contrast, an operating system is not limited by outside appearances . When designing an operating system, the programmer seeks the simplest harmony between machine and ideas . This is why an operating system is easier to design . '' The warlord of Wu nodded and smiled . ``That is all good and well, but which is easier to debug?'' The programmer made no reply . "
