461466 2006-06-07 23:02:00 When installing Windows XP onto my new system, it asks what format type I want.

Do I choose "Format the partition using the NTFS file system (quick)" or do I have to choose the "full" format?

I thought with a brand new disk the quick format might be OK, but I want to do the job properly.

A quick format should be fine.

461469 2006-06-08 03:14:00 Appreciate your replies. I understand the full format takes an age on a 200 Gb HDD, so I was wondering if it is really necessary, as there shouldn't be any bad sectors on a new drive???

This is my first build, so I've no practical experience to go by, and what I've read elsewhere has also reflected mixed views.

461470 2006-06-08 04:08:00 Do a full format. Greg (193)
461471 2006-06-08 04:18:00 This is the first time you are doing this. It's the first time for the disk, too.

Now is the time to find if there are any bad spots.

461473 2006-06-08 06:30:00 I am sure new drives nowadays would be less prone to failure than that of drives from say 5yrs ago.
If I was building a server I would do a full format, but couldnt really be bothered for a system that isnt running 24/7. :2cents:
