461230 2006-06-08 14:08:00 There is a practical joke program which causes exactly this to happen, but I can't remember the name of it, it may even have been mentioned on PressF1 before, you could do a search for it, try "ghost in the machine".

See if any of your friends or workmates has put it onto your computer.

Thanks Zqwerty.
I'm a retired old fart & friends that are still alive are more computer illiterate than myself! ...(Some of the dead ones were quite bright though!)
To add to the phenomenon, it's started to do it's 'shuffle' about 2 to 5 seconds into a 'cold boot'! So ...Looks to be hardware problem (my guess)
BTW ...It's a 'Compaq SD-612B' DVD ROM. Firmware version BQ04. Which appears to actually be a Samsung ...I'll try 'flashing' it! ...
Keep watching this station!

461232 2006-06-09 18:58:00 I take it you have had a look in device manager! Cicero (40)
461233 2006-06-10 03:23:00 The last time I had this problem with a CD Rom the drive was faulty. Yep went thru all the usual stuff checking for viri etc..

Replaced the drive and it never happened a gain. Do you have a spare drive lying around??

461234 2006-06-10 04:19:00 Thanks Cicero & Paulw ...
Yep, Device manager tells me that everything is 'hunky-dory' ( as usual!)
Don't have a spare drive!
An additional problem has occurred. The drive no longer answers the push-button. Drive can be accessed from 'properties' though (choose 'eject') ...
So ...I can still use the thing! (got to push it back in though). PC World DVD does play ...(Hurrah!)
Guess I will have to trash the drive. Maybe replace with a CD Writer, can't see the need for a DVD Writer! Am pondering whether this old machine deserves the expense though.
Will call it quits now I think.
Thanks everybody, for all your help
Regards to all. :)
