1392537 2015-01-22 21:35:00 I see Gareth Morgan wants to change the name of NZ and force schools to teach maori.

Blimey have son that makes a fortune and we have a man who has the answer to everything.

1392538 2015-01-22 21:52:00 I can't see the logic behind changing the name. It's not as if Aotearoa is the maori name for NZ. The maoris did not have a name for the country, only, as I understand it, a name for the North Island - Te Aka-a-Maui.

And what use is making maori compulsory in school? The only place maori is spoken is in NZ and it's not as if maori speakers are numerous. It makes more sense to learn a European or Asian language.

And anyway, what makes Gareth Morgan an expert on maori? Just because he's rich? Thank goodness he is not in Parliament with stupid ideas like that.

1392539 2015-01-22 22:19:00 Moari in Primary or preschool, cant see any harm...

Once you get to High School, its too late. Forced teaching of foreign language at that age wont work, certainly didnt work with I was in my teens.
French at Intermediate School: 95% of the class wasnt interested, I learnt 2 words in a year. I think that was about the Average.
Indonesian at High school: 90% of the class didnt care, didnt try , in fact resented it being forced on us . I learnt maybe 10 words in a year.
Complete waste of resources.

But the big question is...
With those Pakeha wanting compulsory maori, why havnt they pulled finger & learnt maori themselves.
Why havnt those Pakeha taken night class for 3 or 4 years to become fluent in Moari, instead of saying we should force it on the kids.

How are Gareth Morgans Maori skills. If he isnt fluent in maori (he has the time & money to do so), how the heck can he even begin to suggest such a thing

It's not so much is there any harm, rather is it of any use? A complete waste of time and resources. As I said before - better off learning a European or Asian language. At least there will be a use for that. But of what use is maori? None.

But I do agree, 1101, the sooner you start the better. Why not start learning another language in preschool? I'm certain they would pick it up easily. Children of that age are like sponges, they soak up anything and everything.

1392544 2015-01-22 23:55:00 Sounds like a stupid Idea to me. I'm all for Maori preserving their culture and language, in fact I respect them for making the effort (those that do). I don't have a problem with many places reverting to their original names or the prevalence of Maori words and phrases in daily use. I don't care if they teach Maori in school either.

Where I start getting annoyed as a non-Maori 5th generation Kiwi is when My culture and the culture of other non-Maori Kiwis is ignored or treated as non-existant.
The Name of this country is part of our culture and tradition as Kiwis just as much as any Maori name for it is. We all know the name Aoteoroa, it's not being lost or forgotten. If they drop New Zealand as a name will it be remembered for very long?

1392545 2015-01-23 00:20:00 My point was, if you have a son that is rich, then it would seem it is ok to pontificate on NZ traditions, with the expectation no doubt that we should all obey.

And let us knock off the cats whilst we are at it.:<)
