1392293 2015-01-19 04:45:00 From the article -

"The poor are hurt twice by rising inequality - they get a smaller share of the economic pie and because extreme inequality hurts growth, there is less pie to be shared around."

There is a third way that the poor are hurt - by the rich using their influence to stifle policies that would help the poor.

A typical example of this is the insistence of the rich that any policy to inject money into the economy "must treat everyone equally". It sounds like a good idea but it means that if we try to (say) double the living standards of the poor, any policy must double the living standards of the rich! That is a big ask. The result is that the policy gets quashed.

A typical example of "treating everyone equally" is only allowing money to be injected via interest rates. (You mustn't tax the rich.) Yes, low interest rates increases the money supply. But the money goes to the rich who use it to buy houses, push up their price, and make the poor worse off

By definition, both of you are the 'wealthy'..... so up against the wall with both of you.
What you pay for internet alone would feed a truely poor family for a month. Why not give to the poor instead of spending on yourself, dont get that new PC/TV/shirt/shoes

If you are really concerned about the poor, work 7 days 16 hours. Give 90% of your pay to the poor
Too hard, dont want to do that...typical response of the wealthly, no real interest in helping the poor

Some of us do give, both time and money, to help those less fortunate (in a variety of ways). It also, however, has shown me that even with help, there are a ton of 'poor' who don't want a helping hand, or to help themselves, and just want to have it served on a platter. As with any large group of people, there is diversity, and some of the tales are quite depressing and upsetting, with people genuinely yearning for opportunity, but there seem, from the relatively small sample I've seen, to be an equal number who just want handouts.

1392296 2015-01-20 02:28:00 Yes, yes.....there are those who are happy to rip the system off while having crime lifestyles etc.

But the real poor don't. There was a series of docos on Sky a while ago...The Worst Place To Be...

Like the rubbish collector family in Indonesia.
The fisherman in some wee African village etc.

They ARE poor, they can't get out of it, they try there hardest and work long hours.

The rubbish guy used a handcart to collect rubbish (and trim trees, clear drains, whatever they told him to do) from the rich houses in a certain area.
They residences of these places set the pay he got. There were no govt rubbish service to the houses...

He then took it home, dumped it in a pile by his hut and the whole family sorted through it and separated recyclables. The rest was meant to be collected by a truck every now and then, but usually wasn't.

He wasn't even the poorest lot on that program.
