1392180 2015-03-11 21:52:00 Firstly, thanks for all the encouragement guys.

Since my last post I’ve tried out a number of Augmentative and Alternative Communication programmes but alas I haven’t found one that will do what I want. They are either unable to be edited, and if they can, they don’t work how I want them to. Then, some are $300+ and there is no guarantee he will be able to work even the simplest version.

So, I’ve decided to try and build one myself out of XL. So far I’ve got a six cell worksheet in landscape mode with pictures installed and want an audio file to play depending on which picture he clicks, or touches, if using a touchscreen.

I’ve managed to embed an Audio file in a cell but that removes the picture. Somehow I want to be able to just click the picture and the audio plays.

I realise this wasn’t quite what XL was designed to do, :) but thought it worth a try. Maybe another programme would be better suited?

Anyway all input appreciated.

:thanks

1392181 2015-03-12 05:29:00 MS Access could do the job, but it would be a bit tedious to set up initially.

In theory the form he clicks on could be dynamically designed to show the most frequently clicked icons at the top, or be context sensitive if you wanted one choice to lead to another choice.

With enough effort it could be designed so that the only additional work needed is simply to embedd additional icons and sounds into a table.

eg. Clicking on DRINK could lead to the short list of water, tea, beer, juice
Clicking on Toilet could lead to #1 / #2 / Both / PRONTO / Too Late options

Thanks Paul, I have Access but aren’t familiar with it at all .

However, I do think we need to keep the prototype dead simple because we may be wasting a lot of effort if he can’t operate it of his own initiative .

I’ll list what we know now to give you a better picture .

1: We know he has very good comprehension of the spoken word .
2: We know his total vocabulary consists of two words, Yah and Nah .
3: We know he can’t read or write . If you ask him to point to an object he will, but if you write it down on a piece of paper, nothing, no response .
4: We know he can operate the Remote for the TV which gives me hope, even though the Speech Therapist is doubtful he would be able to operate the iPad of his own accord .
5: We know he can only use his left arm which means he can’t do anything that requires two hands .

So this brings us back to a very basic spreadsheet or database where clicking, or in his case touching, a picture plays an audio file .

If by some chance he can master that, then we can look at adding functions as you suggest but in the meantime it is just a matter of somehow clicking a picture or large icon to play an audio file which should be simple enough but I can’t seem to find a way . :groan:
