| 1392567 | 2015-01-25 07:03:00 | let us not look past who Gareth Morgan is. Firstly a highly respected economist and pretty darned rich in his own field. It was he that put up the money to start up the sons business. Any reward he gets from that is well deserved. He is right about the cats. Apart from that, I think this idea stinks. Ken :) Well said. Although he is a bit harsh on cats. :D Rats and ferrets do a great deal of harm. Gareth Morgan is selfmade. He and his wife Jo (from Southland) lived in a housebus in the early days and he was in his 50s by the time he became recognised as an economist. The guy has Aspergers which makes it difficult for him to be politically correct. He says what he thinks which comes across as a bit in your face at times. The only reason he is rich is because he helped his son out with an idea - Trademe. Could have been a total failure but Gareth and Jo financially supported Sam - as parents do. Moreover he and Jo gave away most of the money ($47 million) from the TM sale to a charity. Gareth Morgan is very far away from being a selfish wealthy man. |

It won't sit all that well with some of the lefty types that feel they have the benefits of philanthropy such as Gareth's and his son by right though. |

| 1392570 | 2015-01-25 08:46:00 | It seems GM believes that NZ pakeha/white (or whatever), should have done things better in respect to the treaty - whatever that could be.But then again he has written numerous articles for NZH, covering all kinds of topics. Maybe he's just a temporary thought leader, not one that would passionately follow through on what he says. As for learning Asian? How many generational NZ's want to do that? In Pakuranga mall the other day (where I grew up in late 60's's- 80's). Man what a change, used to be about 80/20 pakeha/maori. Now like walking through mini Asia/india and a touch of Kiwi (or is South Africans?) |

He doesn't raise an idea and then abandon it . The guy is consistent . We have very few people in NZ who are independent thinkers: Morgan is one . The guy is odd and upsets people, but he has an enormous brain . He is worth listening to because his ideas are unselfish . Putting his own money into ridding Stewart Island of introduced pests is an example . From about 1995 Gareth Morgan conducted public seminars in which he asked why financial advisors were paid 4% commission by finance companies? Furthermore he asked why finance companies paid such a large amount but only offered investments 2 . 5% above bank rates? He was a lone voice in New Zealand . How right he was but for a decade everyone whom you would expect to trust - bankers, accountants, lawyers, sharebrokers, economists etc all stayed silent . |
