I'll have 16GB next time too pctek, but have had 8GB for over 2 years and have never had an issue related to amount of RAM. I want 16GB just in case it becomes useful during the life of my next pc not because it's needed now. As I said my tablet with 2GB of RAM runs windows 8 very well, it is very limited on what you can install and run by it's nature though. It only has 32GB of storage after all. I would want 4-8 GB on any modern desktop pc. |

If you run out of virtual memory what do you think happened to your RAM before that point? |

| 1403131 | 2015-06-24 01:27:00 | If you run out of virtual memory what do you think happened to your RAM before that point? Depends. If the hard drive is full or nearly full windows may complain about low memory regardless of RAM use to alert you to the issue. I have gotten low memory warnings with 8GB of RAM and no programs running - because I removed the drive the swap file was on without realising it. There was no actuall shortage of RAM at the time. The same thing can happen if you try to run without a swap file in some circumstances. You don't have to run out of virtual memory to see the error, windows is alerting you to the fact it has no space to manage the swap file in not necessarily that it actually needs the space for anything at that moment. Sure more RAM will make a system better and perhaps mean you see those errors less often, but if the drive is still full you will still see low memory errors. Not to say low memory errors are never RAM related, just that they are often not. |

It happened only for me when I ran out of RAM and Windows complained the swap file was too small (and all the RAM was full too). After upgrading to 8GB and thus doubling my RAM, there are no longer any messages when running the same programs\games which caused the messages before. | Agent_24 (57) | ||
| 1403133 | 2015-06-25 07:23:00 | Personally I would say 8GB is where you want to be... for 2 reasons. 1) Most store bought computers come with a 64-bit OS so limiting yourself to 4GB due to a 32-bit OS is largely not applicable nowadays. 2) RAM is reasonably affordable so popping in another 4GB is not really a significant expense. Over and above this, having more RAM than you actually need is always beneficial you just need to find out how much is required for your needs. Why run with the minimum any way? Having more than you need effectively allows you to use your computer to a desireable level of performance which I think is what most of us want... gamer or not. Just my :2cents: Cheers |
