2015-01-16 08:03:00 | Had a stroke myself in July 2012. Luckily (if you can call having a stroke luck) it was the left side. Still, got my voice but have only got minimal feeling on that side. But reasonable mobility. I am still able to drive my school van but had to undergo intense medical checks, lengthy driving testing and monitoring for a period of time. It was great that the school did all this for me at the age of 70. All this is why I can joke about things :) What I am trying to do is to explain to you that even though you wonder if you have bitten of more than you can chew, you will be thanked a million times for your help. Stroke recovery is a real bastard!! You are all confused, very emotional, bursting into tears at the drop of a hat, scared shitless, and you grasp at any help given. After the hospital, physios, occupational therapists, Uncle Tom Cobley and all, you are sent home with assisance with physical gadgets and that is about it. From there on, it is family and friends that help you get back on the road to self sufficiency and personal dignity. Sorry to have waffled on a bit but based on my experiences, you are a top guy! Three people I know reasonably well had a stroke very soon after their flight (one had just arrived in Europe). Two of them survived. One of the two is still recovering and as kenj pointed out, it can be a very long haul, no pun intended. | Marnie (4574) | |
2015-01-17 04:57:00 | Well for those following this saga I can report the following. I started off (after exchanging pleasantries and opening a couple of stubbies) ;) with Pauls suggestion and placed a key, a matchbox, bottle top, and a pack of cards on his table and asked him to identify the key. Initially there was only a blank look so I asked him again and blow me down if he didnt identify the key, so I progressed on asking him to point to the other objects one at a time and it took a few seconds thought but he got them all right. I then asked him which one unlocked the house and after much thought he identified the key first time. Then I opened the pack of cards and placed four cards in front of him and asked him to identify each one. eg I asked him to point to say the 7 clubs and he got it right and so on. Then I shuffled the pack and dealt another four cards, but this time I asked him to point to a card that wasnt there. This had him stumped and he wound up pointing to them all in turn but to his credit he never pointed to the same one twice. This exercise gave me some hope so we moved onto singing. Well his favourite band was CCR and he himself used to do a great rendition of Midnight Special, but alas he couldnt remember the group or the song. Ill take him up a recording of the song and see if that jogs his memory. I passed on Morse Code today blanco but I have found among lifes little treasures a You Beaut Morse Key along with other nostalgia. :D Finally, Im now in possession of his iPad, so Ill download those programmes you suggested DeSade, once Ive worked out how. Will keep you all informed on progress.

2015-01-18 20:42:00 | A little update . Well I turned the iPad on and straight away realised I was in trouble because it wasnt doing anything until the correct password was entered . Ahhhh, heres a problem because the owner of the iPad is of course unable to speak or write and probably cant remember anyway . However, with the help of his wife and a few uneducated guesses we got it turned on only to find we now need an iCloud password which isnt the same as the iPad . Now bearing in mind this is my first encounter with an iPad it would seem that the damn thing is useless unless you have WiFi? I cant find any useful applications, like say Office, and you dont appear to be able to attach a thumb drive/flash drive let alone a T stick . So the question is: Do the programmes suggested by DeSade in post #2 of this thread require WiFi to run? If they need to call home or sit in a Cloud then we can forget progressing further because the Rest Home doesnt have WiFi available to patients . Personally, Im getting the feeling that an iPad is about as useful as a Lucas C39 generator . :D

2015-01-18 21:14:00 | Probably don't need Wi-Fi to run but they will certainly need it to access the store to download them. There is no external connection to a iPad, everything goes through the Apple (itunes) Store.

2015-01-18 21:34:00 | I'm hooked onto my home WiFi which I can use to download stuff but need yet another password to enter the store. I wonder what that will be.

2015-01-18 22:01:00 | Ok, another thought. would there be a factory reset or the like that would wipe all the passwords etc.? Something along the lines of someone selling their iPad but not their accounts etc. In other words, bringing the iPad back to new condition with new accounts and passwords required.
