1393019 2015-01-26 19:58:00 I was with Orcon for about 13 years and gave them the flick about 2 years ago because they wouldn't let me have more than 30gig of data unless i signed up for their crappy genius system. When I gave them the 1 month notice to quit the CSR was sympathetic to my reasoning but the marketing people there had made the rules and they weren't aloud to bend them.... paulw (1826)

1393021 2015-01-27 22:00:00 Yeah their Genius router is awful :(
What was the problem you were having with them? We may be able to help in the interim.

I've heard nothing but good things about Actrix. They're not the cheapest, but as with all things you get what you pay for and they seem worth the investment :)

1393022 2015-01-28 09:17:00 It is very strange how different people can have contradictory experiences with the same ISP. I have used Orcon to host my domain name and my business email for (I think) over 15 years and have never had a problem. My monthly account runs to around $10 for both services, and when I had to make some changes to move my business traffic through Orcon when Spark wouldn't cooperate anymore, I made two calls to Orcon, they were answered promptly both times, the correct advice was given and all was well.

Their service has been 100% trouble free, and to my knowledge I have never had an outage. I am wary of hubris, and I realise that it might all crash around my ears tomorrow, but I have to say that their service has been beyond reproach.

The situation is not dissimilar to the Spark/Xtra email problems which so many people seem to suffer, yet my email stays up with 99%+ reliability. Yes, there is an occasional stoppage, I had one a week or so back, but all was well within 30 minutes. I literally cannot remember the last time that my email went down for any length of time sufficient to cause concern, and from Forum comments last time, I am not the only one who has better than 99% up time.

Cheers

Thanks for the feedback Chill. Partly based on your comments, along with those from DeSade, pctek, decibel, et al, (thanks also) I decided to run with Actrix.

"with all things you get what you pay for" - it's interesting the Orcon person I was talking to said they had decided to bring their help desk back on shore in the last quarter. To achieve cost savings in the way they had hoped (low cost off shore call centres) surely must have been false economy resulting in losing more customers rather than retaining. I also noted your comments BillyT - as a business customer, are you sure you weren't assisted by a business help desk based here?

:)

1393025 2015-01-29 11:15:00 Yeah business customers pay a premium, call less (So cost the ISP less), and get NZ-based Helpdesk support. Chilling_Silence (9)
1393026 2015-01-29 11:41:00 To be honest I never really had bad issues with any ISP.

2 or so years with Xnet
Actrix promotion then surprisingly got ADSL2+ (Xnet wasn't at the time)
Promotion with Orcon (using my own modem so not Genius). Might had been earlier on..
Cheaper options so took up Telstra Clear then came Vodafone
UFB on offer so took up Snap.

I found Orcon might have been 2 or 3Mbps slower at times than Actrix. Never really rang up customer service. The person wasn't that nice on the phone when we swapped ISPs. All the ISPs the max outage was maybe a few hours including Actrix when they got hit by a ligtening or something... Actrix does have the best customer service though, better than Snap IMO, not that cheap though.

I organised My Republic for someone and their customer service is fantastic too... I would say maybe on par with Actrix.

I've noticed that Snap's call queue can be longer now compared to 2yrs when we first joined them.

1393028 2015-01-29 19:57:00 I've only been with two ISPs - Paradise initially (on a dial-up plan) and then Telecom for the last 13+ years.

Only ever had a major problem once -and that was wiring-related and the Chorus tech was here for two days solid trying to resolve it (which he did).

I've had other minor calls to the Telecom Helpdesk in Manila but although I hate their scripted responses, I've have nothing bad to say about them.

If you think the issue is too complex for them, the trick is to ask to be put through to "Complex Support", which is based in NZ.
