2015-06-29 05:32:00 | Hi folks I am staying at my daughter's place at the moment. Her printer/scanner has sucked the kumara, and she needs to get a replacement. An economy model, and small footprint because of the lack of space at her computer station at home. What is the current favourite brand/model these days? I have only ever bought HP, apart from one appalling Canon jobbie years ago that steadfastly refused to paper feed, so my experience is pretty limited. Perhaps there are cheapish/small footprint printer/scanners out there that you could recommend? Thanks for any advice.

Might be a bit large though. If you are set on an inkjet I've had good experiences with some cheap Epson models personally, except for crazy ink prices of course. |

2015-06-29 07:54:00 | I have had nothing but success with Canon and I don't run there ink either, I buy mine from computer food at a fraction of the cost with no problems at all and next day delivery to the SI from Auckland with free shipping. | gary67 (56) | |
2015-06-29 22:55:00 | What is the current favourite brand/model these days? To be honest, brand is just personal preference, based on far too few printers to really make that comment .Talk to someone who sells or repairs hundreds of them. I dont really think you can say one brand printer is better than the others. They all make some dud's , they all make some excellent printers. The newer Canon & Brother Ive seen have the issue where they spend 1/2 their time cleaning the heads. Turn it on , it cleans the heads ; print one page , it cleans the heads 1st . Very annoying, and wastes alot of ink. Forget about brand, look at the no of pages per ink cart, look at cost of ink carts, check if cheaper aftermarket carts are available. Also, factor in that you will only get starter inks carts included, that will run out very quickly. Think very carefully before buying a color laser (I wouldnt unless you print alot of color), look at the cost of color toner .

2015-06-29 23:29:00 | Thanks everyone for your ideas - all useful stuff. My daughter now says (hours after I posted...) that she only wants to print black, and will get colour photos done elsewhere. It might have helped to have that information. However that opens up the option of a laser as dugimodo says, but I doubt a laser will fit the footprint/price criteria. Regarding wainuitech's comments, yes, I found that there were a lot of suitable Canon printers that were on special, and it said "finishes Monday", without specifying which Monday. Sure enough it was yesterday so I missed out. Gary, I have never heard of computer food - I have always used cartridge world. I will look up cf to see if their prices are comparable. My daughter lives in Albany, so it would be easy to get ink in Auckland if that is where they are based. I don't like the sound of the repetitive head cleaning 1101. HP are bad enough, and quite irritating with its "printer preparation - do not interrupt" delays. I will do some research on the issues you raise in relation to models that fit the price/footprint criteria. However, we were talking last night about putting a wireless printer somewhere else in the house, thus getting rid of the need for placing it in the limited space of her computer station. Thanks everyone.
