1393058 2015-01-26 01:25:00 We have not had any rain in Auckland for at least a month. I need to water each evening to keep my garden growing. But what about the weeds? They don't seem to need watering and yet they flourish. Why is that, do you think?:illogical Roscoe (6288)
1393059 2015-01-26 02:10:00 A bit of rain (a few light showers) is forecast for Wednesday and a bit heavier/more on Saturday - but I'll believe it when I see it!!

The way to tell the difference between a weed and a valuable plant is that when you pull on it, the valuable plant comes out of the ground easily...

1393061 2015-01-26 02:55:00 Because you plant things in your garden that aren't well suited to the growing conditions and need help. A weed is just a plant, there is no difference except whether you deem it desirable or not. The things that sprout up on their own without your help tend to be well adapted to the environment, not at all surprising if you think about it.

I had a bunch of rose bushes around my house when I bought it, most planted in stupid places in my opinion. With the effort it took to kill them I'd say some plants are every bit as tenacious as "weeds". Four rose buses in particular I mowed off at ground level every fortnight for about 4 months before they stopped growing.

1393062 2015-01-26 03:34:00 I will only water plants in my garden that will feed us, anything that doesn't give us food can wait for the rain. I abhor people who water their lawns what a dumb thing to do unless you have sheep. Lets face it watering the lawn makes it grow then you have to waste your spare time mowing it. gary67 (56)

on the other side, a lot of grasses don't handle high heat and lack of water well and the grass dies back leaving weeds to flourish. then you have to spray them out and patch the lawn. easier to water the lawn if you have the water to do it.
however there are those who over water their lawns. its good for them to have a dry spell from time to time.

Worse than that are the idiots who hose down the pavement in front of their houses, or like the bloke I saw 2 days ago pressure hosing the gutter to clear leaves away (ie push them along to outside his next door's property).

Edit:I forgot to say many weeds, especially dandelions have deep roots, so get a bit more moisture

1393065 2015-01-26 04:18:00 Dry weather encourages root growth, if the plant survives it will be more drought resistant next time. mzee (3324)
