“Mr Smith, a safety-certified lighting technician”

“Deputy Chief Fire Officer Trevor Gallagher said Mr Smith had used a Leatherman tool, which has folding blades and pliers, to cut the teenagers' cable connected to a campground power box”

I suppose next thing we’ll hear is OSH claim he wasn’t wearing a “High Vis” jacket and that was the problem.

Seriously though, if what has been reported is correct, I suggest it might pay to check some of his other handiwork.

1392260 2015-01-16 00:14:00 I don't want to make light of it, I'm sure he has grieving family and friends etc, but it's mind boggling that anyone would try to cut a live power cable especially with a leatherman which is a stainless steel multi tool. I don't know what a "lighting technician" is exactly but he was clearly not an electrician or even particularly technical. Either that or he was under the influence of something enough to not realise unplugging it from the caravan didn't disconnect it from the power.

A sad result from a rage inspired act of foolishness.

1392261 2015-01-16 01:47:00 A decent pair of sidecutters which would have had insulated handgrips may have only given him a tingle before the two ends dropped away. I have a leatherman but certainly wouldn't use it for electrical work. The pliers are only needle nose and although sharp, probably take a couple of bites to cut through. They are great things but really only McGyver things. IMHO!
We had a plumber working on a underground drain at our workshop in the 70's. He cut through the mains cable with a spade. Big bang and we had no power till the sparky arrived an fixed it up. Told us that even a metal body spade wouldn't have given him a belt as the cable is in the earth already.

Weren't game to try it though.

1392262 2015-01-16 04:38:00 Seems a bit strange for someone who worked with lighting. I have to guess he was pissed off and pissed at the same time to use uninsulated pliers. Also seems strange the camp commandant never gave the kids their marching orders, they are usually noise Nazis.
I wonder if everything was kosher like the caravan electrical WOF and if the RCD was out to lunch. Was the campground power box inside its test date?

1392263 2015-01-16 06:43:00 I've seen such a varied set of 'facts' in the various media that I don't know what to believe in this case.

One report said the ocupants of the annoying caravan had actually left it to go to the beach, and they found his body when they returned at 3am.
Another said he'd unplugged the cord, attempted to cut it, and was killed when re-plugging it.
Others have assumed he was cutting into a live cable.
Another said someone else got a zap when trying to 'rescue' him - suggesting the system was still live, and he was still in contact with it.

Another report said it was a battery operated system that was making all the noise, which makes it even more tragic.

Seems for 3 nights in a row the scum in the neighbouring caravan had kept him awake.

If indeed they were on the beach til 3am (and had left their music playing in an empty caravan) then it's even more tragic, and these other 'offenders', although 'innocent' really deserve to be lined up and booted repeated in the backside until they start coughing up yesterdays breakfast.

If they'd shown any manners and consideration for others this would never have happened.

Gotta wonder if in some warped sense they could be accused of being culpable.

There should be campsite rules in place. Silence by 11pm or lose your power supply, or be evicted in the morning.

1392265 2015-01-16 07:38:00 It’s weird because the report said:

"Mr Smith worked at Waikato Sound and Lighting for the past five years."

I’d imagine they would encounter 230v somewhere along the line?

Better yet, until they looked like that they had three Adams Apples ...
