461625 2006-06-08 10:07:00 I have upgrade m/board from asus a7v266/amd xp 1600 to asus a8ne with 1gb ram and new graphics card (galaxy gf6600gt) using same ram and hd. OS is xp pro.
When booting I get to the start of window loading with scroll bar then blue screens (to quick to read) then reboots.

Any pointers for this newbie having a go and learning heaps on the way?
Thanks in advance.

any more info required just ask please
regards
G

461626 2006-06-08 10:17:00 format reinstall.

if your lucky boot into safe mode, remove all drivers then boot with OS cd and do an upgrade install.

you can't just change a motherboard, the OS will spit the dummy.

461628 2006-06-08 10:22:00 No need to format and reinstall!!!

Just boot from your XP CD and and when it says that it has detected another copy of Windows, press R to do a repair install.
This will reinstall Windows for the new hardware while keeping all your data and settings in place.

that dosn't always work as left over bits of old drivers can cause all sorts of fun and games. thats why it pays to remove the drivers first then do the install.

461630 2006-06-08 10:30:00 Screw the dirty install/reload, You don't want a bandaged up OS on a brand new rig.

Back your crap up, Format, Install.

Nothing more to be said.

Good to know thanks but I've never had a problem doing a repair install. (unless windows was screwed to start with :))

i have found the problems don't often present themselves till later down the track. they really show up when you have a non related problem. seen it a few times, a simple problem with the pc, easly fixable but it all turns to custurd. sometimes you can go in and clean out all the left overs etc and it will work ok but then you get to the stage of repairing repairs ontop of repairs, things go downhill very quickly.

its simply not worth mucking around with.
