| 461793 | 2006-06-09 02:04:00 | I have installed, reinstalled and re-reinstalled 98SE for about the 40th time on this stupid, dumb, doo-doo, poop-y, crappy Compaq and I still get the same error . I have used several different copies of 98SE, and two different keys (legal ones too!), and it gets all the way thru the install and about 3 or 4 windows past the key, it throws this up: Windows protection error . You need to restart your computer . C:\WINDOWS\system\vmm32 . vxd: Missing/unable to load . Sometimes I get this one: Invalid VxD - Link call to device3, service B failure . What in Hades is device 3? Where is service B? How can I repair this install? I've re-installed according to the notice a few times; I restart the puter, then it goes all the way thru and dies again and again and again and again . I've tried 4 different harddrives and changed out the RAM and reseated the AUX RAM, reseated all the connections and generally removed every piece of hardware except the mouse, keyboard and the monitor . There is no other hardware in the system . . . I get a good post signal, the colors are bright and clear, the resolution is good and there's no smoke, although I wish it would! I do not intend to put this unit online . . . it is just for reference material that will be hdd installed . I need to take some pills right now . . . brb :waughh: |

| 461794 | 2006-06-09 02:51:00 | Have you tried a different CDROM player Have a read of this (www.computing.net) , changing the boot order (hd would need formatting first), i don't see how it would work but it's worth a shot You have looked at these support.microsoft.com www.helpwithwindows.com although they only seem to be of use on bootable systems |

| 461795 | 2006-06-09 05:26:00 | Why not load the W98 (or whatever it is called) directory to the hard disk, and do the installation from there? It does look as if it's having trouble reading from the CD drive. It's always handy to have the installation files available, anyway. | Graham L (2) | ||

Wouldn't I need some sortta opsys running to do that in the first place? BTW: I finally got it to load up . . . still has that vmm32 . vxd missing . . . but it asks if I want to start anyway and it does after I hit "any key" . Now that I've found anykey it's a lot simpler . I DID get the vnetbios . vxd fixed though . . good thing I have multiple other puters running and can dnld and send it to the Compaq on a disc or floppy . I got these ( . techspot . com/tweaks/updates/#Win98SE" target="_blank">www . techspot . com) individual updates for it too from a site that has it slipped into a complete package . . . it was easy to burn it to a cd-rom and load it into the Compaq too . Since this is never gonna see the internet, I think it's got all it needs now . |

Create a folder in C: called cabs and copy everything from the win98 folder on the cd to the new C:\cabs folder Then cd C:\cabs Then setup /is /ie /iv The setup will run from tha harddrive and you won't need the cd rom at all |
