I normally press the "sleep" button on the keyboard & XP is configured to go into "standby mode".

What is starting to happen (not all the time) is that when I bring it out of standby, it will start up from as though it had been completely shut down.

There is a fraction of a second when there is writing on the screen (different from my normal boot screen) that says " there appears to be a problem" ........ that's all I got to read before it disappeared. I try to use the "pause" button but it does not halt the boot at that stage.

Is there a way that I can configure XP to allow me to read what is flashed on the screen, or view a log of it somewhere?

I assume there is a Log written of it?

Control Panel - System - Advanced - Startup and Recovery - Settings - untick Automatically restart..." That will give a locked up Blue Screen and error message.

If this is a desktop PC, be aware that standby and hibernation mode was only ever designed for laptop hardware. While it "sometimes" works on some desktop hardware OK, any updates to drivers etc can nobble it as its not necessarily a consideration by the hardware or software developers.

It sounds like it is dying when it wakes.

462742 2006-06-13 21:05:00 Thank you Godfather.

I have configured it as you have suggested & now await the next crash.

Come to think on it, the Standby mode was working fine for a long time & I have recently installed an updated driver from Windows Update.
Maybe it's the culprit, will need to keep that in mind.

462743 2007-01-13 20:25:00 The PC started to present with "checksum errors" not long after my previous post & to cut a long story short ....... the Motherboard was replaced & all goes well .... theoldfarter (1792)
462744 2007-01-13 21:54:00 NEVER download drivers from the Windows update site. They'll definitely make things worse / crash.

ALWAYS download and install the drivers from the maker's / manufacturer's site.
