2006-06-12 22:51:00 | know you're all sick of questions/complaints about xtra/jetstream but here goes anyway I joined up to xtra about 2 months ago on the 3.5 Mb plan, since then the max d/l rate I have had (and it doesn't seem to matter peak or offpeak) is about 160KB/sec. When I was with ihug on 2Mb, I would get around 180 - 220KB/sec varying through peak time. My external modem (D-Link DSL 302G/2) reports connection to the exchange at 4288 Kbps (and don't tell me about distance from the exchange Telescum, cause its only 200m up the street), on all the speed tests from nzadsl.co.nz I have done in the past 2 months it always tells me I have a 2Mb connection. I have done these tests at all times of the day even 3am and its always the same - between 2000kbps - 2100kbps(and I HAVE cleared the browser cache before each test). My question is this. .. is Telecom restricting my bandwidth on purpose . are they not only actively trying to maintain a monopoly of microsoftian proportions, but also guilty of false advertising, and an underhanded method of conserving bandwidth. Are they advertising 3.5Mb to get customers but discovering that they can only supply 2Mb? I don't know. The way I see it is they ought to be supplying me with the 3.5 Mb I signed up for - it's like buying a holden advertising it has a 5l V8 and discovering down the track that it only has a 1600 4 banger. And isn't it convenient that the multinational scum can blame d/l speeds on lines/distance to exchange/ user etc the list goes on anyway rant over, not sure if this is good place for this but thats how it is | straitjacket (9698) | |
2006-06-12 23:05:00 | Bad luck, phone xtra, or would you like me to do that for you, if so just post your account details and I will get onto it right away. :) | Rob99 (151) | |
2006-06-12 23:09:00 | thanks but no thanks . . alternatively if you're interested you could help me form a lynch mob to march on telecom headquarters | straitjacket (9698) | |

2006-06-12 23:49:00 | Ranting snipped My external modem (D-Link DSL 302G/2) reports connection to the exchange at 4288 Kbps (and don't tell me about distance from the exchange Telescum, cause its only 200m up the street), And isn't it convenient that the multinational scum can blame d/l speeds on lines/distance to exchange/ user etc Whatever congestion problem you have has nothing to do with your line or distance. Your line speed is exactly as expected for a 3.5M connection so you can worry about something else.

2006-06-13 01:48:00 | I fail to see how my line speed can be exactly as expected for a 3.5M connection when I got faster rates from a 2M connection and correct me if im wrong but doesnt 3.5M stand for 3500 Kilobits/sec which in turn would be 3.5 million bps and if so 3500000/8 = 437500 bytes /1024 = 427 KB or am i way off track in my method of working this out? plz excuse the noob if that is the case | straitjacket (9698) | |
2006-06-13 01:56:00 | Ring & complain if you enjoy banging your head against a brick wall ( you will get more satisfaction if you did that) Change back to IHUG.......... That won't help - he'll still have slow speeds. Its like my situation, great while we were on 2Mbps, then when we all got "upgraded" to the new faster speeds everyone off our local exchange now has rubbish speeds. MY router reports 4288 and my avreage actual speed is 633. You can complain to Telecom. I have and until they fix it I get my months broadband fee refunded. Every month. Getting it fixed now would be preferable but while they dither at least its free slow broadband. IHUG on the other hand would tell you its Telecoms fault(yes) and tough luck, no refunds.

Telecom actually seem to compensate for network "overhead", which is kind of honest for even Telecom. As pctek says many people have actually experienced slower speeds since the great speed increase to 3.5M as it seems that Telecom have either screwed up the upgrades at the exchange level or they are now overloaded.. I'm running at about half speed 1600 Kbps (nz adsl speedtest) at the moment but my router is reporting 4288 Kbps. Other days it is been running at full speed. And speed from overseas sites is another story... |
