462358 2006-06-11 16:22:00 Hello.
A while back I tried to extract a .rar which was over 4gb and my PC kept freezing each time at around 90%. I've looked around and found out that in order to unpack a file bigger than 4gb the file system on destination drive should be NTFS. So I converted it and it worked.
Now I'm trying to do it again, I have a 4gb archive and my PC keeps freezing. Also, I'm trying to make a DVD iso which is over 4gb as well, and I have the same problem. Using DVD Decrypter my PC freezes when it gets to 50%.

Please help.
I'm on Win XP, Celeron 700, 128mb RAM.
I've checked for viruses and haven't found any.

462359 2006-06-11 19:31:00 how much free space do you have on the hdd and how big is the swap file set to...... drcspy (146)
462360 2006-06-11 19:57:00 Both the iso and the file I'm trying to unpack are about 4.3gb, that leaves me with about 300mb on the drive.

Can that be the source of the problem ? Because when I managed to unpack such a large file before (it was also approximately 4.3gb) I couldn't have much more free space, deffinitely not more than 700mb.

462361 2006-06-11 21:08:00 well with only 128mb ram your system will be using the swapfile function big time.....and I'd seriously doubt that only 300mb left on the drive will allow it to function correctly at all.....you need a couple of Gb free and make sure you set the swap file to say 850mb min & max.....or bigger drcspy (146)
462362 2006-06-12 05:00:00 250mb ram is the reccomended minimum for XP Pancake (6359)
462363 2006-06-14 08:31:00 well with only 128mb ram your system will be using the swapfile function big time.....and I'd seriously doubt that only 300mb left on the drive will allow it to function correctly at all.....you need a couple of Gb free and make sure you set the swap file to say 850mb min & max.....or bigger

Here's what I don't understand. Just a few weeks ago, I was able to unpack over 4gb archives with a tiny swapfile (default XP, 96mb is it?), basically no free space left. Sure, it was freezing at about 96% using every extracting tool I could find, but after converting to NTFS, there was no problem. I was extracting 4gb files left and right.
Now, following your advice, I've set the swap file to 1gb, I've cleared up bunch of space, and every software from WinRAR to Powerarchiver stops dead at exactly 50% (2% give or take). Can you make anything of it ?

462364 2006-06-14 08:34:00 sorry out of time but the default swapfile in xp is FAR bigger than 96mb lol......its more usually set to min 1.5x ram and max 2.5x ram if I recall correctly drcspy (146)
