462372 2006-06-11 20:57:00 After updating WinXP Home from the MS website, a small green star appears all the time on the system tray, bottom right part of the desktop. Every time the PC boots up, a balloon reminder says "WinXP SP1 no longer supported after Oct 2006". How do I get rid of this #%X@&$ green star and the #%X@&$ balloons? BTW I did read the Details of every "update" before downloading, but I do not recall anything about this green star. :( MS  Rutherford (10399)
462373 2006-06-11 21:19:00 You mean you don't have SP2?

If you don't DL it or get it off a friend and install that, that will solve the problem (as you won't have SP1 anymore...)

HTH

462374 2006-06-11 21:31:00 Or don't do the updates. I have SP1, no updates and XP is happy and stable. Of course I did remove a few bits such as IE, OE, MSN etc pctek (84)
462375 2006-06-12 05:08:00 Install SP2 that will solve your problem :) ;) anyway SP2 is fine, just make sure you don’t have any thing nasty on your computer & make sure you have a backup of your important files etc… before you do it ** just in case ** stu161204 (123)
462376 2006-06-12 06:16:00 Guess I should have been more specific - I would like a registry hack to get rid of the SP1 unsupport reminder.

I am very reluctant to install SP2. Previous threads here, plus a friend, have attested to the fact that SP2 can slow a system down. SP2 is only to make WinXP more secure but I run Zone Alarm Security Suite plus Avast, so there is no need to install a huge XP patch with the possiblity of messing things up.

There is no proof in that .

There is only a 50 / 50 % chance of that happing & if you look after your system well then the changes of stuffing up your computer will drop .

When a friend of mine says it slowed down his system, which is the same thing others here on PF1 have said, it is proof enough for me . Also there is this, straight from the horses mouth:

Programs that are known to experience a loss of functionality when they run on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer ( . microsoft . com/default . aspx?kbid=884130&product=windowsxpsp2" target="_blank">support . microsoft . com)

And this (http://www . builderau . com . au/) web site says:

But, all of these security improvements won’t come without some considerable pain . ZDNetUK reports that Microsoft admits that as many as one application in 10 will experience problems due to the upgrade (I consider that a conservative estimate) .

Above all, when security is taken care of by ZA, a good AV, and wise PC usage, there is no need to install SP2 .

Back to my question: what registry hack will remove the green star and balloon?
