2006-06-16 02:21:00 | Actually if the computer's been on the shelf in a box for more than a week, then it's outta date for updates and hotfixes already! The (?) second Tuesday of every month has major updates from M$, and they can get their tails twisted if they don't get on the ball and send out a crucial one before their own personal "window of opportunity" on said Tuesday. Since AVG gets it's own updates all the time and installs them too, it does not mean that it is running a scan....just updating. Unless you assign it a time to do so, then it will just sit there protecting from assaults, but not diving in and looking at what you already have in the puter. Run it on a schedule as you do Spybot and make sure to turn on all the little tools in Spybot too, running the ADVANCED MODE; Teatimer and IE LOCK are also very important. Did you know that you and your son can interface on the Help area? You can invite him in to your puter from long distance and he can arrange things and download and run programs remotely. He, of course should have the same OPSYS as you...but I think (here come more flames for me thinking again) that it will even work cross-platforms, as long as they are not too different. Maybe someone else knows for sure if....say...XP can confer with ME or 2000. Well, maybe not ME, but likely it can with 2000. Joe, Xp to xp only for the build in help assistant which is instaigated thru e-mail invitation. Or use another product such as VNC (free), pcanywhere, gotomypc etc....

2006-06-16 05:48:00 | I left the pc running over night to catch up with all dl's etc, at 6am this morning there was 72 attempts by user unknown (came up as 000000 . 000000) to invite me to 'sloppy reds!' . That just sounds nasty! hahahaha The PC is all good I actually did some of the stuff that SurferJoe had suggested to R . M . Bloody good fun breaking in a new pc, well new for me, now the buzz has gone I have to get a new toy . . . .

2006-06-16 08:55:00 | Yes EVERY alert that pops up in ZA is an attack by some evil hacker lol, god I hate that program it encourages paranoia. Most Alerts are legit network traffic, that most decent firewalls won't make a big deal about and simply block. ZA bloated, slow, DRAMATIC got to love it!

2006-06-16 11:14:00 | It was funny, its like a drama, you try and set you computer up so it is safe to go on the net, you don't want to risk it as it is safe offline, but the time must come. You send it forth with all its antivirus securities and it spybots. The pc shudders and cries at first, then like a cheap b-grade action it gets pissed off and stands up for itself and takes on the enemy (virus etc) then turns into a rambo were it wastes about a thousand....blah blah blah yup. Im bored. | rob_on_guitar (4196) | |

Im bored.I tend to think there is a lot of ummm Redmond-induced paranoia with Windows and it's users. Granted I use Linux now (but that is as part of my 'must be something else, maybe something better out there' search). Granted one doesnt want to be leaving there Windows computer on all night (thats just an invitation), but I believe (and know) that intro-ing the computer to the net will (usually) not see it infected in the first 11 seconds as people tend to think. I know this as I did it with a new install of Windows 98, unprotected by anything other than a router with reasonably lax rules. There are however exceptions to the rule... to me you would have to be damned unlucky to be infected so fast. | Myth (110) | ||

2006-06-22 12:40:00 | I sold the first pc. And now tonight I bought another one for a clean hundy. This one is not as good as the other, but it is xp, a HP but it was used as student computer from a course last year. It had all the basics, ive put an antivirus on it but like the other PC I had this one hasnt been on the net either. The body is small so Im guessing I cant upgrade much on this. Should I get rid of it or try do it up? Or just keep monitor, keyboard etc and trade the bod in? I like doing this, I am still relatively new to all this but its quite fun. Am I crazy? :waughh:
