2006-06-14 10:44:00 | Hi, I have a windows 98 compaq pc sitting in my room. I want to get some old info off it but has no burner. On want to put it on to my hp xp. Can I go usb to usb and set up a network link? is it a painless affair or should I just leave it. Cheers for your help. Rob

2006-06-14 10:48:00 | Depends on how much data you are talking about: 1. For a relatively small amount how about using a pen drive? 2. For a larger amount I would remove the hard drive and add it temporarily to the XP PC.

2006-06-14 11:21:00 | yea, Id say medium, a few word docs, a relatively small music program plus some footage of my band playing at a bar. Maybe 15mins of video. | rob_on_guitar (4196) | |
2006-06-14 11:25:00 | DON'T plug in your usual usb cable into the ends of the computers worse case you'll blow your powersupply..or that's what i've heard only firewire can network like that for usb you need a special cable and software you can get it at dse if you want (XH8177) for $38 if a lot of data then a proper network or ext hdd can be used there's loads of tutorial online if you want to setup a network if both comp already got network cards then just get a network cable and set things up i got ext hdd so that's kinda handy in your situation ask your friends/geeks and see if anyone have one you can use just to copy some files across it's not a painless affair for me.. but here's just a few options to let you decide

2006-06-14 21:37:00 | I'd go with John's suggestion: use a USB pen drive. They are cheap and actually everyone needs one as the old floppy days are (nearly) gone. I have tried connecting two PC's, 98 to XP as well as XP to XP, and eventually gave up - it is not always an easy option. BTW, you may have to download a driver for the USB stick to work on your W98 PC, but this is no big deal. Ask us here if you don't know how.

Hi Rutherford, Can you recommend a good USB pen drive, one which you can easily download a Win98 and Win98SE driver for it. Have only got a CDRom drive on my 98. Also, where abouts in the back of the unit do you plug it in? Up until now, I've either emailed stuff over to my winxp laptop or put it on a website 'YouSendIt' and picked it up from there. Real mickymouse way of going about it. Also is there a good life span on those pen drives, as it will be used a lot? Cheers :) |

2006-06-16 01:23:00 | MMM I have one of these ( . ascent . co . nz/ProductSpecification . aspx?ItemID=168116" target="_blank">www . ascent . co . nz) which has served me very well over the past two or three years of constant use . You can now get a 1GB drive for what I paid for it though . It came with a mini-CD with the drivers for Win 98 and Win ME on it and so far it has worked on all machines with USB ports which are the narrow rectangular slots either at the back of the case or at the front . It is an essential little gadget for geeks, I reckon, and I'd be quite lost without mine now . :)
