462971 2006-06-14 06:29:00 Is anyone else having a problem downloading and installing update KB 905474 ? I have been trying each day since last Thursday, when I was notified about it, but when I go to install it, it comes up as failed. I have just completed a large Windows Update ( 9 updates ) all successfully installed except this one. It was previously installed on 26 April and is listed in the Update History so I don't why it needs to be installed again.

Thanks, Finn.

462973 2006-06-14 07:30:00 If you watch carefully you'll see that almost every time you update any of the service packs you'll get another WGA pack too. The latest is supposed to install a "phone-home" program that tells M$ all the time, or even when they inquire if you are still legal. Stinks...it's just a form of spyware.

Anyway....I had the same trouble with this install (legal, fer sure!) tonight with the 9 updates I got. I hadda go use the "Express Install" instead of the "Custom Install". It made it a lot easier this time for some reason. I then went back and re-scanned for the custom stuff and got 4 more.

I hope the Mepis learning curve isn't too steep! :nerd:

462974 2006-06-14 07:56:00 Hmm... I don't know why the download and installation should fail, but in actual fact the Notification Tool does not, at this time anyway, need to be installed to get the updates, and, with all the talk about it "phoning home" to give MS info about your system, I'd have thought it better not to install.

Or if it has been installed, then uninstall it as has been mentioned in another thread.

However the latest WGA Validation Tool KB892130 does need to be installed to get updates.

I suspect that in the same way as the Validation Tool keeps being updated, then the Notification Tool will eventually be given more 'bite' :)

462975 2006-06-14 09:56:00 Many thanks for the replies and information. I have just done what Lucy suggested - a successful download this time! - so as to stop getting the yellow update notification.

Finn.

462976 2006-06-14 10:16:00 You could have gone to windowsupdate and unticked this.

Then it wouldnt have come up again.

It isnt needed.

That's true, Speed, but then you are locked out of all but the "absolutely essential" updates until you (zombied) accept their spyware . :xmouth:

Mepis is looking SO good now!

462978 2006-06-15 10:04:00 Wrong . The notification isnt whats needed to check for updates .

This notification update will bring up the crap on the desktop, if u have a pirated version, if u install it .

It doesnt matter whether u install this notification tool or not .

You'll still be able to check / download updates from Windowsupdate . Or the MS download site .

I fought it your way too for a few days until I could not get past the WGA tool insertion they insisted I have . I resent that I need to be re-certified as legal over and over and over again . As such, it makes me feel they are trying to tighten the noose on illegal installs . . . maybe they will not be able to detect them all until the illegals get to a certain point in discovery .

My son told me that they are going after the corporate installs now, as they seem to have the most abuses by pirates . As the list of unused and therefor unlicensed-by-default installs increases, they are eliminating more and more hacked version keys or just plain old installs that got sold with the opsys installed but the data removed from the hdds .

BTW: my son works for M$ Tech .

462980 2006-06-15 18:04:00 corporate installs now, as they seem to have the most abuses by pirates.Personally I doubt that. I reckon that software piracy is much more dominant by individual users. Think about it - they'd of course go after the corporate users where they can find them, because... they're the ones they can get to pay fines/penalties. But in reality the corporates can afford the legit versions or alternatives. The guy in the street can't afford Windows, he sure can't pay any penalties.

Of course they want to nip the problem in the bud by getting to the guys that hack their software, and those that sell it or distribute it. Losing battle Mr Gates! You extort your customers, you gotta take the losses! *pfffft*
