463768 2006-06-17 02:04:00 Hullo all - I've just bought a laptop for the first time, after having a desktop for many years. :)

I have also setup wireless network(?)/ connection with a Belkin wireless network starter kit. I'm happily connecting to the internet from the laptop. My next question - what next to send files from the desktop to the laptop?

Do I need a networking card in my desktop, or is there something else I should have?

Cheers, and thanks in anticipation!

463770 2006-06-17 02:31:00 How are you connecting to the Internet from the laptop?

A\That is, are you using the wireless network to use the desktop's connection, or does the other end of the Belkin wireless link make the connection (through an ADSL modem/router?) .

Is the desktop connected to the Belkin box (probably with a "Cat5" cable)? If so you have an Ethernet card, and you are already there . ;)

If you need to have the desktop turned on for the laptop to see the Internet, you've already got the local connection; all you need to move files are some shared directories on each of the computers .

If the Belkin box is the one which makes the connection to the Internet, yoiu will need to connect the desktop to it; either with a wireless card or with an Ethernet card and a cable . It might have an Ethernet card in it anyway . . . look at the back for an 8-pin US "telephune" socket -- "RJ45" . (A 6 pin one would be a "real" RJ12 telephone socket for an internal modem) .

The model number of the Belkin box would help .

463771 2006-06-17 07:01:00 Thanks for your replies - just back home again . The model number (as far as I can tell, is Belkin 54g . I can get the internet on the laptop when the desktop is turned off .

Your comments about shared directories gives me some ideas - not sure if it will work . I take it that I should put files I want to share there, and they should be seen by both computers . . .

I'll just try . :)

463772 2006-06-17 08:33:00 No - that doesn't work! Back to the drawing board... R.M. (561)
463773 2006-06-17 08:36:00 Just create a folder on each and share it, as if it were on an ethernet network .

Thats if you're using wireless . Just dont share the whole hdd .
