463478 2006-06-25 07:32:00 Are you using another program for email as well Laura??

Sometimes, if OE isnt the default email client links wont work.

It has to be the default email client.

Or go to start/run, and type regsvr32 URLMON.DLL

Close OE / IE first, before u do this.

Or go here (support.microsoft.com)

463479 2006-06-25 08:41:00 Thanks, Speedy.

I had already gone through the processes outlined in the first of your M/S Help & Support links a few days ago (on helpful PF1 advice from the thread I posted then) and done everything I could think of to ensure Outlook Express was the default email.
Plus I'd never had any other email program ...

But I see now that it was the OE/Internet Explorer link stuffing things up.

Because I'd uninstalled Firefox (Yes, I will reinstall later), I didn't realise that the "Internet Explorer needs to check if it is the default browser" was missing its tick - or that was needed after it became the only browser.
Or that was having an effect on Outlook Express...
So it's been a learning curve I thank you for..

But just in case I need that IE repair option..? Where do I find it?

463480 2006-06-25 08:54:00 Try the info here (support.microsoft.com)

There is no option (or entry) in Add/remove programs, for OE or IE.

Altho changing something in sysoc.inf might bring it up in add/remove programs.

463482 2006-06-25 09:04:00 You get the option to repair IE when you try to uninstal it as I remember.

I have just read Speedy's entry and I have not done this in XP but I have a number of times in Win2K and Win98SE, XP seems different. Perhaps it only worked on the SP1 version of IE.

Thats if IE appears in Add/remove programs, which it doesnt if u use XP.

463484 2006-06-25 09:47:00 If IE isn't in Add/Remove, try reinstalling it, that sometimes puts it into Add/remove. Ok, so other times it tells you that you are installing one that is the same version, and the install stops, but it is worth a try. supergran (108)
463485 2006-06-26 01:23:00 I've now run every check, scan etc. I can find and been advised to try, in Normal mode and Safe mode. I ran a System File Check and a lot seemed to go on but nothing has changed, I still cannot change my IE homepage without editing it in the registry whilst in Safe mode. As I mentioned earlier I tried an install of IE7 Beta and this failed because it could not access the relevant registry setting. Maybe installing IE7 would have succeeded in Safe mode?
It's not a big deal as I am using Firefox which does not have the same problem and I'm not prepared to attempt a complete re-install of XP just to fix this niggle. It would seem that a re-install of IE originally installed as a part of XP is a major event and could easily screw things up completely. So after all the Housecalls, Spy-bot's, virus scanners, Trojan Scanners and all, I think i'll just remove all the IE shortcuts, pretend it's not there and stick with Firefox!
Thanks for all the input, if I ever get it sorted I'll post back.

463486 2006-07-30 00:14:00 Hi PressF1'ers
Some of you may remember that I tried everything possible to rectify the inability to change IE homepage. Thought you should know that a couple of days ago Zonealarm posted an update to, from memory, "fix a problem with updating homepage setting" or something like that. I downloaded and installed the update and what do you know.......all is now normal with IE! Tools>Options>Change Home Page works once more.
Thanks for all the input I received.

463487 2006-07-30 00:27:00 Probably Zone Alarm was the problem. Cicero (40)
