463468 2006-06-24 06:27:00 WinMX files are very nasty if no AV scanner. This dude should watch out. MTLance (6768)
463469 2006-06-24 09:41:00 Hi Speedy

Have done as you suggested and when running a scan with Trojan Remover it reports <No active malicious files were found and no changes were made>. What may well be of interest is the message when running the utility "Reset Windows HOSTS File" which kicks back with <File I/O Error occurred when trying to re-write Windows Hosts file>. Could this be the same gremlin that blocks writing changes to the registry?

463470 2006-06-24 17:10:00 Looks like a good time to burn it all down and re-install Windows from scratch with ALL THE UPDATES AND HOTFIXES!!! SurferJoe46 (51)
463471 2006-06-24 17:45:00 PS: will somebody tell me what's so good about WinMX, and why it isn't viewed as the mitigating problem?

It looks like a muck-up on all the HJT posts where it occurs. For some reason it likes to destroy programs and cause all sorts of hang-ups, and on other sites, BSOD's.

If it's a necessary for gamers, then I really wonder at what cost do they actually play these games? If the security and sanctity of their OPSYS is of no concern for the sake of the games, then asking for help is kinda like chocolate flavored dirt (or a dirt chockey fish, if that fits).

Run trojan remover in safe mode then. Do the same thing. See if it brings up the same error.

Done that and all went smoothly with no error messages and on reboot the homepage is duly set to <about: blank> which is fine but I can't change it using the tools > internet options dialog. So no change. Re the last post from SurferJoe, I have cleared WinMX out completely from the system including all the host file stuff and I only used it to download some very old music files. As for a re-install of Windows I don't feel inclined to go to that length just for a glitch in setting the home page in IE. The problem doesn't occur in Firefox.
Any other suggestions I'm willing to give a go at.
Thanks for all the input so far.

463474 2006-06-24 23:07:00 I think at this point, it might be a good idea to turn off system restore and boot into safe mode again and do every anti-program you've got. This should be repairable with the right tweak.

Take a snapshot of your system before you do with Belarc Adviser to file away the licenses and keys first in case something goes terribly wrong.

Beside my snappy remarks and snide comments, I really want to see you whip this one. Then I ask you to make a full disclosure what you finally did to make it better; we are all learning here, every day!

463475 2006-06-24 23:16:00 Wouldn't hurt to run a scan from here.

463476 2006-06-25 00:17:00 Why not do a repair instal of Internet Explorer? zqwerty (97)
463477 2006-06-25 06:10:00 Sorry for the hijack, but this seems like a good chance to learn about such a repair.

I've been considering trying an Internet Explorer repair, hoping it might fix some jammed-up-type problems, plus help with an Outlook Express links one. And if not, at least I would've tried...

I gather this is done through Add or Remove Programs?
But neither IE or Outlook Express appear on that list on my machine.
Is that usual?
And if so, where do I find the repair options. please?
